Pandora was a prominent feminist newspaper published in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from 1985 to 1994.[1] Pandora was part of a wave of feminist publishings in Canada published between 1979-1994. Editor and contributor Bethan Lloyd stated that the newspaper was was created to teach and encourage other women to express themselves in print.[1] It was published as an alternative to mainstream media in Nova Scotia. The newspaper shut down in 1994. The newspaper was created with a goal of publishing facts and influencing opinions about female experiences in daily life in Canada.

It was edited by:

  • Bethan Lloyd
  • Debbie Mathers

Intersectionality

Pandora intended to provide intersectional content and articles for free distribution. The newspaper represented a intersectional feminism in order to appeal to a broad demographic, and to represent as many women as possible. In part to attract wider female audiences, lesbian content was moderated in order to not dominate their editorial agendas. In Pandora, lesbian content took an average of 8% each magazine[1].

Free Distribution

Unlike most feminist publishings in Canada at the time, like Kinesis and Broadside, Pandora was distributed free of charge.[1] The newspaper relied heavily on advertising, fundraising and donations to operate. Pandora did not accept government funding in order to avoid political interference, with the exception of a short-term employment grant to hire summer help.[1]
