History

Early Years and Formation (2010 - 2014)

Khalid Ahamed and Kashif Iqbal formed the band while in college with the initial lineup comprising Neil Simon (bass), Adarsh Deokota (rhythm guitar) and Somarashi Bhattacharjee (drums).[1]

Ahamed and Iqbal had been schoolmates and friends in Srinagar and formed the band after they met again on moving to Bangalore. Earlier, Iqbal had started his musical career as the front man of Delhi based band ‘Blank Noize’ while Ahamed was exploring his solo music projects .

With its initial line up, Parvaaz won a string of college level competitions in 2010. It was around this time that Sachin Banandur took over on drums. Banandur had been playing for the Bangalore based band ‘Insane’. After the release of their first single Dil Khush, the group went on tour through India playing at many popular music festivals. In the course of recording a new song in 2011(which was later scrapped) Neil Simon had to leave the group[2] and was later replaced by Fidel Dsouza from the jazz band 'Bourbon Street'. [3]

In 2012 Parvaaz was nominated for the Toto Music Awards.[4]Khufiya Daastan was released as a single in 2013 and remains one of their most popular tracks and is considered a concert staple[5]. In 2014 the band's EP Behosh was nominated for the Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GIMA) music awards under the 'Best Rock Album' award category.[6]

Baran (2014)

Parvaaz decided to independently release their first full length studio album Baran. The eight-track album was recorded and mixed at the Nathaniel Production House in Bangalore with engineer Jason Zachariah. Rolling Stone India noted the album’s 13-minute title track is said to showcase the band’s 'moody and progressive leaning sound'.[7]

The album included guest musicians who contributed to a few tracks. Sanjeev Naik from Swarathma played violin on ‘Ab Ki Yeh Subah’ and Saxophone player Seth Malloy featured on ‘Fitnah’ and ‘Ziyankar’. Other collaborating artists included guitarist Ramanan Chandramouli from Blushing Satellite and guitarist Michael Anthony Dias from Mad Orange Fireworks.

To fund this album the group started a crowdfunding campaign on Wishberry and received strong support from their fans and admirers. In an interview to Rolling Stone India the band said -

“ Although the plan was to record the album first and recover the costs via crowdfunding, the band says they overshot their initial budget and didn’t think they’d rake in much from crowdfunding.”[8]
Emergence and Success ( 2015 - 2016 )

Parvaaz won the Toto Funds the Arts Awards for Music in early 2015 for their Album Baran.[9]

Soon after the band opened for British band Alt-J at the Emerge Festival held in Bangalore on 28 Feb, 2015.[10]

In 2016 Parvaaz won the Sennheiser Top 50, a nation wide band hunt whose grand finale was held at Hard Rock Cafe, Mumbai. The finale featured five bands including Peepal Tree, Daira and Symphony Novel. Rolling Stone India wrote -

Parvaaz, whose performance was nothing short of breathtaking... Vocalist Khalid Ahamed’s plaintive vocals cast a spell on the young college-goer crowd that watched the band’s entire set with the rapt, disciplined attention of an operatic audience. Parvaaz performed songs off their 2014 LP Baran, such as “Roz Roz” and “Beparwah.” With their unique mix of rich lyrical content comprising Hindi, Urdu and Kashmiri underlaid with a bed of robust guitar work, it was no wonder that the band went on to win the competition.’’[11]

In 2016 Parvaaz contributed music to the National Award winning film Soz (Awarded in 2017). The film won the Best Debut Film at the 64th National Film Awards.[12]

Transitions (2016)

In July 2015, Parvaaz co-produced their first feature length concert film/live album Transitions shot at the Jagriti Theatre, Bangalore, India. The 90-minute concert was released in 2016 and was conceived, directed and co-produced by Bangalore based filmmaker Gokul Chakravarthy. Parvaaz invited Baran collaborator Sanjeev Naik (Violin), Rauf Abdul from Ministry Of Blues (Keyboards) and singer Alexis D’Souza for this performance. the album was released on Youtube. The album was featured on MTV Indies and aired in 3 episodes[13]. In his review of the album Rolling Stone India’s Anurag Tagat wrote-

“ Transitions intends to showcase the changing sound of Parvaaz, from their bluesy 2012 debut Behosh to 2014’s poetic prog-leaning Baran and newer, mellower songs such as Shaad and Colour White...”[14]
Rolling Stone Hot list, Shaad and Colour White (2016 - 2017)

In December 2016 Parvaaz was featured in Rolling Stone India's 2016 Hot List[15]. Parvaaz released their first video single Shaad on YouTube in April 2017. The video was created by Gokul Chakravarthy after he heard a live version of the song. Parvaaz later produced and recorded this track for subsequent video release. Rolling Stone India described the song -

“ Shaad subtly touches upon contemporary issues such as the urban-rural divide, farmer distress and the general identity crises among the youth in modern India.”

In this interview to Rolling Stones, vocalist Khalid Ahamed said -

“The video is basically about loss...It looks like an interplay between two people, but it is actually the story of only one person’s journey.”[16]

In May 2017, Parvaaz released the music video for their single Colour White on YouTube. The concept and direction for the video was done by Parvaaz. The video was edited by drummer Sachin Banandur. The track was recorded and mixed by Parvaaz’s live sound engineer Rahul Ranganath at Monohive and Third Eye Studios, Bangalore.[17]

A Rooted Departure, Rolling Stone Cover and More (2017 - Present)

In August of 2017 Parvaaz went on their first international tour to Canada. The tour titled ‘A Rooted Departure’ consisted twelve shows played across three cities - Toronto, Hamilton and Brampton. Among other venues they played at the Monster Rock Orchestra in Brampton, The Harbourfront Summer Festival, Small World Music and at the Panorama India Day festival in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square. The tour was conceived and produced by Purple Patch Inc.[18][19][20]

Parvaaz was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone India in their May 2018 edition where they said-

There’s no denying Parvaaz enjoy an unexampled spot in Indian indie. Their music is unmistakable, idiosyncratic, cinematic, and there’s no other band that sounds anything like them. Try labeling their music and chances are you’ll struggle..”[21]

Director Kushal Srivastava used Parvaaz’s Beparwah as a soundtrack in his 2018 film Vodka Diaries.

In March 2018 Parvaaz won the Radio City Freedom Jury’s Choice Awards for Best Rock Artists.[22]

The band is currently working on releasing their new album by the end of 2018. The album has been recorded by Shantanu Hudlikar at the Yash Raj Films studios.

Musical Style and Influences

Parvaaz is a rare group who have successfully used lyrics in Kashmiri and Urdu and combined them with an international soundscape to occupy and create a unique sub-genre. Parvaaz have cited hard and classic rock of the 1970’s as their main influences along with contemporary world music. Their lyrical inspiration comes from a range of Urdu and Kashmiri poets and folk songs. Some of their songs are written in collaboration with Kashmiri lyricist and writer Umar Allaie.[23]

In an interview to Hindustan Times they said -

“[Our] music has been inspired continually by a great heritage and the rich folklore that surrounds us. Western music brings progressive elements towards a style that is more guitar-driven, and we find that balance between what we feel is the expression and the vision of the theme,” says Iqbal. Among artists that inspire them are legends from the Indian and international circuits. “Artists and groups like Tinariwen, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, Led Zeppelin inspire us. Closer home, we have Indian Ocean and Avial, who have broken the landscape into a very regional voice that our audience relates to,”[24]

In an interview to Mid-Day Guitarist Kashif Iqbal said -

Yes, our poetry is inspired from Sufi poets of Kashmir. In fact, one of the songs is inspired from Gulam Ahmed Mahjoor’s poem on spring, which talks of flowers blooming in the valley. But musically, we are more inspired from World music,”[25]
