From January 2015 to July 2018 he was Executive and Artistic Director of Exeter Northcott Theatre with a remit of strategic revitalisation.[1] [2][3]<[4] Paul is an advocate for regional theatre and its future.[5] Productions at Exeter Northcott Theatre included THE RAILWAY CHILDREN plus a UK tour directed by Paul[6] and Schiller’s DON CARLOS with new theatre company ARA, starring Tom Burke, which he produced for Exeter Northcott Theatre in October 2018.[7] Paul initiated an Associates Programme and an Impact Series bringing academic research together with the arts, at the Northcott and on tour BEYOND MY CONTROL [8] Paul also directed BETRAYAL by Harold Pinter at the Northcott Theatre starring Simon Merrells, Nick Moran and Sarah-Jane Potts, in Feb/March 2016 [9] and the anti-trafficking play by Martin O’Brien THIS IS MY BODY at Exeter [10] and on tour which previously played at St. James’ Theatre London (Best Stage Production in the Anti-Slavery Day Media Awards 2015) [11]Paul and the Northcott Theatre were the subject of a half hour documentary shown on BBC One and BBC Four in November 2015. Part of the BBC's national ON STAGE season. Narrated by Maureen Lipman, with contributions from John Nettles and Lesley Joseph.[12] Formerly Paul was on the board of the Exeter Northcott Theatre and was an Artistic Associate of the Nottingham Playhouse.[13] He was Co-Artistic Director of Fireraisers Theatre Company for five years and he is a referee for theatre applications to The Wellcome Trust. Paul worked with the poet Murray Lachlan Young and directed THE INCOMERS, by Lachlan Young[14] Tour 2013 and The Pleasance Theatre in London. [15] 2013 Paul directed the site-specific piece MANCHESTER SOUND: THE MASSACRE[16] (nomination Best Ensemble Performance Manchester Theatre Awards)[17] [18] for the Library Theatre, Manchester and set in a secret location representing two worlds, the ‘Madchester’ scene of the late-Eighties and the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. [19]Paul directed two plays by Martin O’Brien: GOOD CREATURES and THE JEWELLER, a free adaptation of THE JEWELLER’S SHOP by Pope John Paul ll with Ten Ten Theatre.[20] GOOD CREATURES was researched through a series of residencies in Young Offender Institutions with a fixed company of actors and supported by Arts Council England, the Plater Trust & Fear and Fashion (Award winner).
