Payal Kadakia is the co-founder of physical fitness class website ClassPass.

Early Life

The younger daughter of two Indian immigrants, Harshad and Geeta, Kadakia grew up in Randolph, New Jersey and participated in her high school's cheerleading team. She began classical training in Indian dance at age 3[1] and started performing Indian folk dance at age 5.[2]

Kadakia attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she graduated with a degree in Management Science. She joined Bain in 2005 as a management consultant. In 2008, she joined Warner Music Group as an associate director of strategy.[3]

ClassPass

Kadakia created ClassPass in 2011 when she struggled to find and book fitness and dance classes in New York City.[4] The company started with a $2 million initial investment[5] from Thrive, General Catalyst and Warner Music Group Vice President of Operations and Strategy Michael Fleisher.[6] Kadakia named the company Classitivity, a search engine for classes, and eventually changed the company name to Classpass.[7]

Classpass expanded to every city in the United States in 2015.[8] As of early 2017, the company was valued at an estimated $470 million, with $173 million from outside investors. Kadakia has a personal net worth of over $50 million.[9]

In 2015, Kadakia was named one of 2015's Most Promising Women Entrepreneurs by Fortune Magazine[10] and was named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in America by Marie Claire Magazine.[11]

Kadakia stepped down as ClassPass CEO in March 2017 to shift to an executive chairman role at the company, while Fritz Lanman was promoted executive chairman to CEO.[12]
