Peace of Blues is an Abilene, Texas blues/rock based band that was formed in 2014. It consists of guitarist/vocalist Kepha Arcemont, bass Greg Copher, and drummer Rocky Glover. The name of the band was created by Kepha Arcemont,[1] who is the guitarist/songwriter/leader for the band. The idea came from his love of the blues and his lifelong promotion of peace! At the time Kepha had already written about 25 blues tunes and it was his desire to play original blues/rock music as the main focus of their set list. To keep the music raw and edgy, the decision was to keep the band small with an emphasis on guitar driven music.

History

Formation and early years (2014–2015)

During the summer of 2014, Kepha was working as a contractor at the Mill, [2] a winery in Abilene, Texas. The owner, Gary McDowell, upon learning he was a blues musician, asked him to play at the winery. Kepha formed the band Peace of Blues in July, 2014. Zach Henderson, [3] whom Kepha met through the Abilene music scene, was the band's first bassist, he heard Mike Ross [4] singing at the Mill and added him on vocals. Louis Lopez who was in the Air Force and was recommended by Zach, was added on drums. They practiced from July to September, 2014 putting together a set list of original songs written by Kepha. On October 1, 2014 they made their debut at the Mill winery.

In late 2014, the band had a change of drummers, as Louis who was interested in heavy metal drumming, left the band to pursue his dreams. They recruited Rocky Glover [5] who was a local drummer on the Abilene music scene, and after practicing 2 times, they played their first live gig at the Neon Parrot Lounge in Abilene, in December, 2014. Their next gig at the Zone Bar and Grill in January, 2015 was well received and Kepha continued to write original songs to include in the set list, which later were recorded under the Peace of Blues band name.

In January, 2015, Kepha decided to find a producer and a studio to record some of the original songs that had been written. He was introduced to Allen Simoneaux, a bass player and recording producer, from a friend and went into his home studio at Cross Plains, Texas. He decided to start small and do an EP with 8 songs. It took over a year to get the songs recorded, mixed and produced. Allen suggested using his son, Jason Simoneaux who is an experienced drummer, playing in a punk rock band in Houston, Texas. Allen would record the guitar and bass tracks and then record the drum tracks in Houston. The hardest part for finishing the project, was getting the right vocals for the songs. It was decided to hire a vocalist from Studio Pros, a recording studio located in Los Angeles, California. After a year of hard work, and a lot of mounting tensions, the songs were recorded and put out as the project called, "Angry Dogs." This concept was inspired by Kepha's interaction with a dog in Omaha, Nebraska. He was about to get in his truck and he heard a dog growling. He looked over to the yard next to his truck and there was a dog chained and sitting outside his doghouse, looking at him growling with his teeth showing a bad ass growl and grin. Kepha thought, damn that is an angry dog. He liked the concept and name, so he wrote it down for later usage! This was the concept for his first album, "Angry Dogs" which was completed and released on June 10, 2016. It included 8 original songs written by Kepha. The song "Trust" and "Without You," were the favorites by listeners.

Peace of Blues 1st album "Music is the Key, Rock is Not Dead" (2015)

At the same time he was recording the Angry Dogs album, he was introduced to Terry Taillon, [6] a local musician/producer, who had built a home studio located in Hawley, Texas. Because of the frustration of production times and difference of artist interpretation of how the songs were being produced for his Angry Dogs project, he decided to record his next album with Terry, while still working on the Angry Dogs album. He went into Terry's studio called, "The Cave," in October, 2015 and recorded 16 original songs, in 2 months. Terry was blind since birth and his sense of music, and his approach to recording, where he allowed Kepha complete artistic control on production, allowed a faster recording time, with less stress. Kepha recorded 16 original songs and had his first album "Music is the Key, Rock is Not Dead" was recorded under the band name, "Peace of Blues." Technically, it's debut preceded his Angry Dogs album by 2 months, being released in April, 2016. The concept of the album title, was that Music is the Key to life, and Rock is Not Dead, unlike many in the music industry seem to imply! There are several songs that compliment the inspiration of past supergroups, such as Led Zeppelin, SRV, ZZ TOP, Joe Cocker/Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Jimi Hendrix Experience, and the Stones. Those who have reviewed the album, see a classic rock sound that is not found today from the rock bands on the scene! Because of this classic rock feel, Peace of Blues caught the interest of local biker clubs and became a regular act playing for the Bandito's motorcycle club, in the Abilene, Texas area. They also played bars and clubs in Amarillo, San Angelo, and Abilene. Kepha, who travels quite alot, played clubs in Omaha, Colorado Springs, and San Antonio, utilizing local back up musicians.

2nd phase of the band (2016)

In February, 2016, the members of the band wanted a drummer who could focus on the band's needs for a full time drummer. Abilene has a small music scene and most musicians played in several bands. Rocky had helped fill in after Louis's departure, but had commitments to his metal band, "Operation Phoenix," which conflicted with the band's desires of a full time drummer. So Mike Ross suggested a local drummer, Mike "Energeeko" Casillas,[7] who started practicing with the band and played over the two years.

San Angelo Blues Festival (2016)

During this time Peace of Blues, played their first Blues Festival. In May, 2016 they played the San Angelo Blues Festival,[8] playing original blues/rock music to a crowd of blues enthusiasts. At that time, Mike Ross was not able to play the gig, because of work conflicts and they had Terry Tailon sit in at the last minute on vocals, to sing for the band. Terry had been recording the Peace of Blues album, and was familiar with the tunes and 2 days before the gig they had an opportunity to practice twice before playing the festival. After the gig, Kepha made a decision to find another singer, who could focus full time on vocals, as Mike also had his solo gig career that he was pursuing. They attempted to try out a few female singers and eventually, they wound up getting Terry Taillon to sit in until they could find a singer. They continued to play live gigs with Kepha on guitar, Terry on vocals/guitar, Mike on drums and Zach on bass. On July 15, 2016 they played on the local T.V. station, KRBC promoting their album "Music is the Key/Rock is Not Dead." [9]

Peace of Blues 2nd album "Rusted Metal-Overplaying It" (2016)

In December, 2016 Kepha started recording his second Peace of Blues album at the Cave in Hawley, Texas. Kepha wrote and recorded 12 original songs with a harder blues/rock edge, and with an emphasis on alot of guitar playing. The album was completed in 3 months, and was released in February, 2017, titled, "Rusted Metal-Overplaying It." The concept title was on an aging guitarist (Rusted Metal) and his desire to overplay the guitar (Overplaying It) on every song! It contained a 10 minute concept song, "Mountain-The Playing Field-Armageddon," which started with a guitar instrumental, leading into children on a playground with jets flying overhead, dumping bombs and rockets into the area, which leads into an Ozzy vocal scream into Armageddon, which lyrics are focused on the theme of war and murder. As a dedication to Gary McDowell who inspired Kepha to start playing live again, the song "The Mill," was a dedication to the local winery and included on this album.

Peace of Blues 3rd album "Change the World" (2017)

In January, 2017 Kepha returned to the studio at the Cave in Hawley and recorded Peace of Blues third album titled, "Change the World." It included 13 original tunes written by Kepha, that had softer blues based tracks, with a more lighter rock sound. Kepha played mandolin on the track "Days Gone Past," a song tribute to growing up in New Orleans and reflecting on his life in the Crescent City. The title track, "Change the World," has a John Lennon flavor to it, and "The Lonely Road," debuted Terry's steel guitar playing. The album debuted in February, 2017 and had a softer blues/rock sound to it. It was well received by listeners. On March 21, 2017 the band played at SXSW for the Freddy Powers Pickin Party. [10] Not knowing much about the music venue, they didn't fit into the country based venue, and although well received and asked to come back, they decided not to return.

San Angelo Blues Festival (2017)

In May, 2017, the band played the San Angelo Blues Festival, and like the previous year, Mike didn't play because of work conflicts and the band called Rocky Glover to come back and assist at the last minute. They also didn't have a singer, so Glenna Glover [11] came to the rescue two days before the gig. The band performed to rave reviews and was interviewed by the local newspaper, the San Angelo Standard. Glenna who is an experienced seasoned veteran playing live music, whose vocals stole the show, also added some flute for the blues song, "My Friends" which would be included in the next album, "Change the World." Many people who attended the festival were astounded with flute being played on a blues song, and that song stood out among the set list.

Angry Dogs band short lived

After the gig, they played more live gigs, with Glenna and Terry singing on different gigs, but at that time, Kepha had taken over vocals until they could secure a lead vocalist. In September, Rocky suggested trying out his girlfriend Elena Phoenix, whose raw bluesy vocals infused some much needed vocals into the band. Since he still had Mike playing on drums on his Peace of Blues project, which was dormant at this point, Kepha decided to use the Angry Dogs name for this new project. It included Kepha on guitar, Rocky on drums, Elena Phoenix on vocals, and Greg Copher on bass. They played their first live gig on January 7, 2017 at the Deadhorse Saloon [12] in San Angelo, Texas to a well received crowd. Just as the project seemed to get off the ground, Elena and Rocky broke up, which caused the Angry Dogs band project to dissolve.

Peace of Blues 4th album "Do You Believe" (2018)

At that time Kepha decided to go back to the Peace of Blues project, which was downsized to a power trio. It was reformed with Kepha on guitar/vocals, Rocky on drums, and Greg [13] on bass. In November, 2017 Kepha returned to the studio and recorded Peace of Blues fourth album titled, "Do You Believe?" The album returned back to a more heavy blues/rock sound and contained 13 original songs written by Arcemont. It had two instrumentals, "Red Hot Tabasco and Rainbow Bridge." The opening track "They Paid the Price," had a Led Zeppelin Kashmir feel to it. The song, "Don't Settle For Second Best" had a classic southern rock sound with a blistering guitar track! The album was once again received well by listeners!

In May, 2018, Peace of Blues returned to the San Angelo Blues Festival. The day of the gig, Kepha lost his voice but still went on to sing. It was not their best performance and he later reflected that he should have just canceled the gig. However, his philosophy is, "the show must go on," and so it did!

Music and influences

Peace of Blues music has been categorized as hard rock and blues rock by their listeners. Although all three current members bonded over blues, each does have his own musical tastes: Kepha gravitates towards blues/rock and hard rock, Rocky likes heavy metal/hard rock and Greg likes heavy metal/blues. The San Angelo Standard Times stated in an interview that the band made a strong showing, however, wrongly stated that the band had just formed. Kepha explains that at the time we lost our vocalist and had Glenna sit in for the gig. [14] Songwriting is done by Kepha, as he seems to have an constant flowing stream of songs and ideas. Kepha stated that a lot of the songs he writes seem to come from the cosmos, as he will be sitting in his room with his guitar and the ideas come to him. After making the core of the music, he writes down words to fit the songs!

[15]

The current line up for Peace of Blues is: Kepha Arcemont guitars/vocals, Rocky Glover drums, and Greg Copher on bass. Kepha is currently working on songs for the next Peace of Blues album project.
