John Newton PennJohn Newton Penn was born in Washington County Pennsylvania. Then in 1855 he moved to the Athens County Ohio, However he was not happy with the opportunities and the locations so he moved once more to the small town of Sidney Iowa. In Sidney he was very happy with the rich farm land. He was so happy that he went back to Pennsylvania and bring his family to Sidney, Iowa. Once he got settled he rode down to Manti to care for Civil War soliders. During the war he tried to join the army but failed because of failing eyesight. In 1876 John Newton Penn eyesight was so bad he decided to give the buisness to his son Alphonso Valdeze Penn, Sr. It is the oldest continuous family owned drug store in Iowa. It has been owned by the Penn's since it was founded.[1] RenovationsIn 1898 Alphonso Valdeze Penn, Jr. purchased the first soda machine.
