They are an ensemble-in-residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. The trio was founded in September 1979 by Allen Otte (b. 1950), James Culley (b. 1955), and William Youhass (b. 1943). Otte and Culley have remained consistent in the group's lineup. Youhass was a member until May 1985; in September 1985, Jack Brennan (b. 1957) took his place. In January 1987, Brennan left the group, and Benjamin Toth (b. 1962) became a member. Toth left the group in June 1992, and his vacancy was filled by Russell Burge (b. 1964). The group's lineup is presently comprised of Allen Otte, James Culley, and Russell Burge. In 2017, Percussion Group Cincinnati was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame. The group has collaborated with composers such as John Cage and Herbert Brün, and they have been the subject of reviews by Anne Midgett, articles in Percussive Notes, and academic theses. They have appeared on seventeen publicly available, professional recordings, and a number of works have been commissioned by, or written specifically for, the group.
