Perkbox^[1] is a cloud-based HR technology platform designed to help improve staff engagement and interaction between management and teams. It offers a suite of products including a platform with access to best in class perks and services, as well as a reward and recognition function.

The London-based startup was founded by Chieu Cao and Saurav Chopra. Perkbox’s headquarters are based in London, with a second office in Sheffield.^[2]

History

Perkbox was founded by Saurav Chopra and Chieu Cao after the two first met while working at Yahoo.^[3] The first iteration of Perkbox, called Huddlebuy was launched in 2011. An initial funding round of £350K was raised, but the business had to pivot several times as the founder’s realised the model wasn’t working nor was it fulfilling their personal goal at the time of helping businesses succeed. Eventually, the company pivoted to today’s business model, with a focus on employee engagement and a mission to build a better society, one relationship at a time. This was when Perkbox was born.

Perkbox has raised over £11.0 million in funding from investors such as Alex Chesterman, founder of LoveFilm & Zoopla, Sherry Coutu, former advisory board member at LinkedIn, as well as the leading European venture capital firm Draper Esprit.^[4]

Perkbox has grown rapidly in the last 3 years, with turnover jumping from £4.3 million in 2015 to £14.7 million in 2016 and in 2017 turnover was £34 million(unaudited).^[5] It serves companies of all sizes from SMEs to FTSEs with names such as OpenTable, Wasabi, Hawksmoor, Rentalcars and Levi Strauss & Co. and has 500,000+ users.^[6]

In early 2017 Perkbox opened an office in Sheffield to meet increased demand, with the company now has over 200 employees between its London and Sheffield offices.^[7] Perkbox also acquired London-based Loyalty Bay ^[8], which offers a SaaS platform for the automated delivery of digital rewards. The company is planning to expand internationally in the second half of 2018.^[9]

Product Overview

Perks: the Perkbox platform provides users with unlimited access to discounts and freebies from hundreds of big name brands across 17 different categories, from food and drink to travel. It is designed to cater the full spectrum of employee wellbeing: financial, physical and emotional - helping employees stay motivated in their jobs and lead a healthy and productive lifestyle.

Reward & Recognition: the reward and recognition function allows users to share recognition, both peer-to-peer and top down. The tool can be used to set company wide challenges that fit your company values, mission and culture, while the ‘Spotlight’ feature lets managers showcase and reward outstanding employee contributions. Employees can be rewarded using the reward hub which caters all budgets. Managers can pick the reward they would like to give their employee from a selection of top brand items and hit send.

Media Recognition

Perkbox was recognised as second in LinkedIn’s list of Best Startups to Work for 2017.^[10] It was also selected as a Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies To Work For 2017^[11] and was included in the Startups 100 list.^[12] The company was awarded the Smith and Williamson Scale Up Business of the Year Award.^[13]

Chieu Cao, Cofounder of Perkbox was named 101 Global Employee Engagement Influencer of the year 2018^[14] alongside other influential speakers such as Simon Sinek and Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn.
