He got his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2016 at University of Missouri-Columbia. He taught at Humboldt State University and is lecturing at Indiana, where he teaches undergraduate Chemistry and Organic Chemistry classes. He has notable expertise in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and pedagogy. BiographyEarly lifePete grew up in Bangkok, Thailand with 1 younger brother. His parents are Theera and Pornsiri Punthasee. His mother works as an associate professor of Nursing at a university in Bangkok at while his father is a small business owner. Pete went to Amnuay Silpa School, and subsequently earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in 2010. In an interview with Missourian, he indicated he got his inspiration to come to the United States when he met a professor from Chulalongkorn University who had gotten his doctorate in the U.S. and had returned to Thailand to teach.[1] While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Pete held large review sessions that more than 300 students gathered to attend. He said that these review sessions made him realize that he was meant to teach.[2] Graduate studiesAfter graduation from Chulalongkorn University, he started into the Chemistry PhD program at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) under Professor Kent S. Gates where he learned techniques in Organic Synthesis and Enzymology[3]. He and his team (see photo) designed a small molecule that targeted Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), an enzyme that is a known drug target for type II diabetes[4]. While at MU, he served as an TA for General Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry I and Lab, Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab, and Survey of Organic Chemistry. His hard work and dedication to teaching allowed him to earn #1 TA Choice Awards in 2012 and 2015 and Green Chalk Award[5] for being an excellent teaching assistant in 2016. One of this review lectures can be watched [6] Punthasee earned his PhD in Chemistry in 2016 and continued in his passion for teaching at Humboldt State University (HSU), California. At HSU he was assigned to teach General Chemistry I lecture and Survey of Organic Chemistry with lab. With more experience in teaching, his teaching style was unique and he was recognized by colleagues and students as one of the most passionate and enthusiastic professors[7]. In spring 2017, the university newspaper The Lumber Jack interviewed Pete and published an article about Pete and his class[8] PedagogyPunthasee was given a stunning 5.0/5.0 rating by his students at IU,[9] and while at MU his students rated him 4.7/5.0.[10] Puminian has had a substantial impact outside academia in his academic capacity and has gone above and beyond to make a difference in the way chemistry is taught. He has inspired students at every level of chemistry to continue to pursue their dreams, whether or not they directly involve chemistry. He has been called, "caring far beyond the call of duty" and "the best lecturer" that a senior student in chemistry has ever had.[2] Personal lifePunthasee is currently unmarried and has no children.
