Peter Fessler, the son of Canadian-German parents, is the only German jazz musician to have an international hit: “New York – Rio – Tokyo”. Nowadays, his instrumental singing sets him apart amongst jazz singers on the global stage. An expressive singer and guitarist par excellence, he is beyond categorization. His virtuoso improvisational lingo, “Fesperanto”, is unparalleled, hypnotizing and indicative of his musical credo: new musical ideas, creative identity. Solophonic / Duophonic are fervent concerts in Fessler’s Brazilian, European cosmic clang. In addition to over a dozen released albums, his musical success includes duets and supporting acts with global artists like: Al Jarreau, Toots Thielemans, Randy Crawford, George Benson, Shirley Bassey, Gilbert Bécaud, Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, Roberto Menescal, Till Brönner, Don Grusin and Randy Brecker. At the age of twelve, Fessler had his first guitar lesson with Rick Abao, his mentor and also the man who discovered him. After secondary school, he spent an extended period of time in the USA where he continued pursuing music. To pay the bills, he played sessions in clubs, bars and hotels in New York and San Francisco. This was when he also started creating his own compositions. Upon his return to Germany, Fessler, whose vocal range is four octaves, started studying voice in a jazz seminar at the conservatory in Cologne. From 1983 to 1987 he was a singer for Trio Rio, a Latin jazz band that gained acclaim for its hit “New York-Rio-Tokyo”. In order to continue developing his own musical ideas, Fessler returned to the United States and dedicated himself exclusively to song writing. During this period, he performed as a session musician for Sheila E. and Rosie Gaines (Prince). Thereafter, in 1991, he released his first solo album “My Songs” and played numerous concerts and performed on radio and television productions. As the German voice for the Walt Disney production Aladdin, Fessler performed the duet A Whole New World with Sabine Hettlich. After the release of his 1993 album, “Don’t Tell Me”, Fessler devoted himself primarily to the jazz and Latin jazz repertoire and the composition of his 2000s album “Signatures”. Al Jarreau pulled him and his guitar on stage for a duet at the jazz festival in Montreux. Fessler was also Randy Crawford’s (1999 tour) special guest. In late 2003 he performed in Tokyo. Since then he has developed his new clang aesthetic (“Fesperanto”), a fusion of voice and classical guitar. On his album “Das mit Dir” (2010) he interpreted German verses by Miriam Frances, Erich Kästner and Alexander Bragao. In 2011 he performed a duet with Alfonso Garrido in Sao Paulo at the Brazilian film festival “Film erzählt Musik”, now known as “Grooves United”. In 2013 he gave two solo concerts in Rio de Janeiro at the “Petrópolis Jazz & Blues Festival“ On Pee Wee Ellis’ “Spirit of Christmas” (2013) album he performed his rendition of the pop classic “Last Christmas”. In 2014 Fessler was awarded the ECHO Jazz in the category “Best National Singer” for his album “Quality Time” (with Don Grusin). That same year he composed new standards for his improvisational language “Fesperanto” with his CD “Intro Da Vida”. Since early 2015 Fessler has been lending his talents as a guest soloist to the Till Brönner Orchestra at “The Movie Album” and “The Art of Melancholy” live shows.
