Count Peter Ivanovich Ivelich (Russian: Пётр Ивелич, also known as Pyotr Ivanovich Ivelich IV; Risan, then Venetian Republic, now Montenegro, 1772 - Tara, Imperial Russia, after 1851) was a Serb Montenegrin who ranks among the most important Russian generals who fought during the Napoleonic invasion of Russia; consequently his portrait was added to the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace.[1]His uncles are count Marko Ivelich, major-general Ivan Ivelich and colonel Simeon Ivelich.[2]

Biography

On June 5, 1788, as a captain in the army of the Venetian Republic, he transferred to the Imperial Russian military service as a lieutenant in the Nasheburg Infantry Regiment. In three months he was promoted to captain, and transferred to the Finnish Chasseurs Corps and, in 1793, to the Shirvan Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of major and appointed the commander of the Shirvan Musketeer Regiment on 17 January 1799.[3]

From 22 April 1799, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he took part in the Russo-Turkish War. He was promoted to colonel on 10 August 1800. He fought the French in Austria (1805) and Prussia (1807). On 24 August 1806, he was appointed chef of the Brest Musketeer Regiment.[3]He participated in the Battle of Lemo against the Swedes (1808-1809); based on merit, on 18 October 1808, he was elevated to major general.[3]

In 1812, as a major general, he served in Ataman Matvei Platov's Cossack Corps, fighting at Mir,[4]Romanovo (where he sustained a leg wound),[5]Moleco Boloto (Inkovo),[6]Smolensk, Borodino, Valutino, Tarutino, Vyazma, Vitebsk, Semlevo,[7]and Dukhovshchina.[8]

Count Peter Ivelich was in command of the Brest infantry regiment, which, as part of the 2nd Brigade of the 17th Infantry Division, was in the 2nd Infantry Corps of lieutenant general Karl Gustav von Baggovut of the 1st Western Army which gave Napoleon his first defeat at Tarutino. He was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir, 3rd degree.[3]

Ivelich was promoted to lieutenant general on 27 February 1813 and participated in the battles of Lutzen and Bautzen.[3]

He participated in the battles of the Great Patriotic War. Between May 1813 and February 1815 he was put on a medical recovery list. In 1815 he became Brigade Commander in the 17th Infantry Division.[3]

On 5 December 1816 (Old Calendar), he took his military retirement on medical grounds,[3]and joined uncle Marko Ivelich in a business venture with the Russian-American Company.[9]

There is no available record of his correct date of death.[3]
