Organizations are not deemed notable just because their own self-published websites metaverify their own existence -- to qualify for a Wikipedia article, the notability test this would have to pass is being the subject of enough reliable source coverage in media (newspapers, magazines, books, etc.) to clear GNG. (And no, general coverage of the national parent organization would not help to make this chapter notable either -- what's required is coverage specifically about PFLAG Portland itself. PFLAG Portland

PFLAG Portland is PFLAG Portland is a national non-profit organization which brings families and friends of LGBT people together in Portland. It is one of the many chapters within the PFLAG organization. PFLAG Portland is one of the oldest chapters in the PFLAG community.

History

1977

PFLAG Portland is one of the oldest chapters in the PFGLAG organization. PFLAG Portland’s cofounders were Bill and Ann Shepherd and Rita and Charles Knapp. They became active in the LGBT Community when their daughters Susie and Kristan came out in the 1970s.

In 1977 Governor of Oregon, Bob Straub, noted the need for a parents support group. The Knapps and Shepherds founded Parents of Gays (POG) that met monthly in the shepherd’s living room.

1982

Parents of Gays elected to join the PFLGAG National Network as PFLAG Portland.

1990

1990 was a time of intense cultural battles at the ballot box. Portland’s PFLAG membership grew at this time because of the initiative restricting the freedoms of LGBT that was introduced. These restrictions were due to the 2004 One man- One Woman marriage amendment in Oregon’s constitution.

2006

In 2006 PFLAG Portland refocused on community-building efforts, Transgender Portlanders, and Portland’s Communities of Color. New partnerships in the community and the launch of a new satellite chapter in 2009 lead to the launching of PFLAG Portland Black Chapter. Now it is a new independent organization serving Portland’s black LGBT young adults. This was the first PFLAG chapter created by and for Portland’s black community.

2014

With 2014 and 2015 legal victories for the LGBT community and the country the landscape for the community changed, but PFLAGS mission of family support did not. In 2014 a satellite chapter, east county, was opened and quickly established itself as a safe space for Portland’s East Side suburbs. The PFLAGS Portland Chapters developed more Training and Policy Partnering to meet Portlanders’ for action in support of their LGBTQ friends and families.
