}}Phunware, Inc. (Phunware) is an American cloud-based software as a service mobile app development platform company based in Austin, Texas. The company was founded in 2009 and has since provided software and development for hundreds of branded mobile applications for platforms including iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile.[1] As of December 27, 2018, the company is publicly traded as PHUN and PHUNW on NASDAQ.[2]

Phunware offers software subscription licensing for mobile apps developed on its Multiscreen as a Service™ (MaaS) platform. Its products range from functional SDKs to custom mobile app development. In recent years, the company has added offerings to service in-app mobile advertising and sell data for targeting campaigns from its stack of over 1 billion monthly unique devices globally.[3] In 2018, the company announced plans to launch PhunCoin, a cryptocurrency ecosystem intended to represent the value of user data on a centrally-governed, individually-validated blockchain.[4]

History

On February 23, 2009, Alan Knitowski, Luan Dang, and Alan Kane founded Phunware to provide enterprises a "mobile-first" software platform that could help "engage, manage and monetize customer experience"[1] while addressing the growing popularity of custom mobile applications spurred by the 2008 launch of Apple's App Store the prior year.

In 2011, Phunware acquired GoTV networks and announced its mobile experience portfolio to have exceeded 150 applications in over 100 countries.[5] This was followed by the acquisitions of TapIt Media Group in 2013[6], Digby[7], and Simplikate Systems LLC in 2014[8] to expand the company's multiscreen offerings to self-service mobile-based media buying, mobile device shopping and real-time location-based services, respectively. The latter would go on to provide the foundation for the company's "blue dot" indoor wayfinding solutions and SDK.[9]

Phunware was ranked No. 1 in the Austin Business Journal's 2013 list of the fastest growing companies in Central Texas with less than $10 million in annual revenue.[10] That same year, the company developed flagship apps for the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium and NBC Sports Live Extra's coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the latter of which supported a record-setting 4 million mobile viewers during the men's semifinal hockey match between Canada and the USA.[11]

Phunware signed a definitive agreement with Stellar Acquisition III, Inc. announcing its intent to merge and go public on February 28, 2018. The merger valued Phunware (as the name of the combined entity) at an enterprise value of $301M on a cash-free, debt-free basis.[12] On December 27, 2018, the merger was finalized and the combined company began trading on NASDAQ under the symbols "PHUN" and "PHUNW".[2]
