This unreferenced essay badly oversimplifies pre-Piaget thinking, which was not as restricted as this says. This essay also oversimplifies Piaget. Since it has no references, it is not verifiable.

The content of this essay is not notable because it is substantially incorrect as intellectual history and could be misleading. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:54, 7 December 2018 (UTC)}}

Many decades ago, it was a widespread belief that children were miniature versions of adults. Everyone believed this theory. Except one person. A man named Jean Piaget. Piaget believed that children weren’t born as adults. In fact, he believed that children were actively constructing their understanding of the world as they grew. He divided this process into several stages, called “Piaget’s stages of cognitive development”.

The first stage starts from birth to two years old. It is called, “ The Sensorimotor Stage”. “Sensori” means senses, and “Motor” means move. During this stage, infants learn about their surroundings through their senses. So through sight, taste, smell, touch, etc. . They also don’t understand object permanence. If you show them, for example, a stuffed bear, and then take it away, they won’t look for it. This is because infants at this stage don’t understand that the object is permanent, A.K.A. , that it’s still there. That is stage one.

The second stage is from two to seven years old. This is the “Preoperational Stage”. According to Khan Academy and the American Nursing Association, during this stage is typically when children engage in pretend play. They also tend to be egocentric, which means that they can’t understand different points of view. If, for example, you’re watching a movie and a child comes and sits right in front of the television, blocking your view. This is because they don’t understand that you can’t see through them, because they can see the TV from their seat. Children at this stage also try to cover their eyes to “Hide” from someone because of the “ You can’t see me, I can’t see you” idea. That is stage two.

The third stage is from seven to eleven years old. It is called the ”Concrete Operational” stage. According to Khan Academy.com, there is a simple test you can do to see if children are in this stage. You fill up two identical glasses with the same amount of water. You then ask the child which one has more. If the child is in the concrete stage, they will say that both of them have the same amount. But the test isn’t finished yet. You pour one of the glasses into a tall and thin glass, and the other into a short and fat glass. Then, you ask them which glass has more. If the child is in the ”Concrete Operational” stage, they will say both of them have the same amount. That sums up the third stage

The fourth and final stage is from 12+ years. It is called the “ Formal Operational” stage. This stage is typically when higher reasoning ability develops. Children are able to think about consequences and moral values. They begin to understand the value of their actions. That completes all the stages.

The stages of development can vary a bit. Experts have found that the process isn’t as discreet as Piaget put it. It doesn’t necessarily happen during those age brackets. Due to recent research, the stages can be considered more as guidelines. It depends on the unique characteristics of each child. These stages are just ground rules. That sums up Piaget's stages of cognitive development.
