Pistol River is an alternative rock band originating out of Grants Pass, Oregon. It is made up of Austin Nelson-Philpot, and Brennen Dodson. Originally, Christopher Yoshida was a third member in the band but dropped out early for personal reasons.

Both current members alternate between instruments, including electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electronic drums, and electric bass.

Origins

Austin and Brennen have known each other since both of them were in the sixth grade. Brennen grew up in Medford, OR, but soon moved to Grants Pass where he'd meet Austin at South Middle School. Austin was primarily raised up north in Portland OR but relocated to Grants Pass for unknown reasons related to his family.

They first began collaborating on YouTube videos under their internet aliases; buddymike216, and thenintendork99.

Brennen has always been a fan of creating/playing music on his acoustic Epiphone guitar. By the age of 14, he already managed to write multiple songs.

Austin has always aspired to be a musician, taking after his brother, Jakob, who composes original music primarily featured on his YouTube channel; LordChrom. Austin decided to take up drumming in his sixth-grade band class just before he moved to Grants Pass, but he never had the chance to actually play until 2015, when he bought his first electronic drum set.

The Band

During the late summer of 2017, Austin, Brennen, and Christopher banded together in Austin's parents' garage to attempt to "jam". Austin had been playing the drums for a little under 2 years by this point, and Chris only knew a few basic chords on the electric guitar, where Brennen was the most experienced musician in the room having played his guitar consecutively for 7+ years.

Chris began playing "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana, and Austin soon joined in on the drums. They supposedly performed the song flawlessly and were stunned in amazement, as that is the moment the three agreed to form a band.

Two months later, Chris had left the band, and Austin and Brennen continued on in hopes of releasing their first song.

Production

Austin possessed most of the band's gear, save for Brennen's acoustic guitar, he had a laptop which was hooked via MIDI into a multi-input interface, electronic drums, three electric guitars, one bass and two acoustics. They later decided to purchase two sets of headphones as well as a headphone splitter to plug into the interface to keep up with the neighborhood's noise ordinance policy.

Austin, having had constant access to the gear, was able to mess around on each instrument to gain inspiration and new ideas. He soon came up with a tune the boys called "Noise" in early production. They continued working on that single project for 9 months tweaking it in every way possible until they successfully managed to release "Noise" which is now titled; "Something Below", their first single.

"Something Below" was released on a multitude of online streaming platforms, including Spotify, Google Music, and iTunes.
