Polly Nor (born 1988), is a North-West London based illustrator whose practice includes hand-drawn illustrations, digital illustrations, animated illustrations, ceramic work and and immersive installations.[1] Much of Nor’s work can be found online under her Instagram handle, @Pollynor.

Personal life and education

Nor was born in Kentish Town, London, England in 1988.[2] Her parents were both creatives, influencing and encouraging her interest and exploration in art from a young age.[3] Nor attended Acland Burghley School in the London Borough of Camden and went on to complete a fine art Foundation at London College of Communications (LCC), a part of the University of the Arts London (UAL).[4] Nor Studied illustration at the University of Loughborough as an undergraduate.[4] After graduating in 2011, she undertook a series of unsuccessful internships in an attempt to find employment within the arts.[4] Nor began temping in an admin role, where it was only until  her illustrations depicting the relatable yet fraught relationships between female characters and their demonic alter egos began to gain acknowledgement through social media, she turned illustration into a career.[4] Nor currently works in a studio alongside a group of artists and fashion designers in Camden, North West London. [4]

Artistic Work

Nor’s work comprises of dark and satirical drawings of  diverse female characters and their inner demon, confronting issues of identity, female sexuality and emotional turmoil.[5] Her series of pastel-hued illustrations present an alternative and uncensored view of the female experience in the 21st century with a frank and humorous perspective.[5] Nor’s illustration work is inspired by her own female experience during the internet age, telling stories of anxiety, relationships and the struggle of self acceptance; female traits often undiscussed.[5] The reoccurring theme of female sexuality prevalent within her work presents an alternate view of women from their objectified and sexualised representation on social media and within advertisements.[1] Her image of the lingering devil is used to visualise suppressed desires, woes that play on the female mind and encourages the viewer to confront their ‘inner demons’.[6] Her devil motif plays a different role within Nor’s varying scenes, yet on the most part are intended to present a figment of the female’s imagination and act as a manifestation of her emotions.[7] In some works the women are demons-in-disguise, once they are behind closed doors, they take off their human-skin suit and are finally their true selves.[8] This notion provides a sense of the demon characters removing themselves from the pressures and expectations of the outside world.[9] Her body of work often draws from popular culture, making use of low-brow references in a surrealist manner.[10] Nor’s illustrations propose a sideways view of feminism, portraying a sense of everyday realism with a combination of a dark sense of humour and visual personality in the depiction of the female from, making a comment on female identity.[3]

Collaborations

In 2016 Nor collaborated with animator, Andy Baker, to create an animated music video for Halfway to nowhere by Chelou.[10] Like many of her illustrations, Nor animates the inner turmoil of the female mind with the image of a demon-like character which adopts the female form.[11] The narrative follows a woman who is trapped in a demonised manifestation of her subconscious.[12] She wonders through a strange jungle where she is then forced to confront her demons and make peace with herself.[12] Chelou is a London based singer-songwriter and childhood friend of Nor, who agreed on a collaboration project together.[13] The animation is reminiscent of Nor’s human characters who transform into demons within a whimsical and surreal world [13] Halfway to Nowhere was Chelou’s first single, produced by British-Japanese DJ and producer, Maya Jane Coles.[13]

Merchandise

Polly Nor sells her own line of T-shirts and editions of her illustrative prints through her online store as a means of funding herself without having to rely too much on commissions that might not be inline with her personal artistic aesthetic or perspective.[14]

Solo Exhibitions

Sorry Granma, 2015

Sorry Granma, was Nor’s first solo exhibition of her digital and hand-draw illustrations. It was held in 2015, at 71 A Gallery.

It’s Called Art Mum, Look It Up, 2017

It’s Called Art Mum, Look It Up, was Nor’s second solo exhibition in response to a dramatic rise to her artistic profile. It was also held at Protein Studios and included an installation room, large-scale sculptural work and a full collection of hand-drawn and digital illustrations.[7] Her installation room acted as an immersive experience, recreating a version of her bedroom which is a reoccurring scene in her illustrative works.[14] Her first installation piece included life-size latex bodysuit human skins, akin to those worm by her devilish illustrations, hanging in a wardrobe.[14] Both her interactive and illustration work exhibited presented Nor’s reoccurring visual metaphor of societal pressures to look and act a certain way.[14]

Airing My Dirty Laundry In Public, 2018

Airing My Dirty Laundry In Public, is Nor’s most recent solo exhibition, held at Protein Studios, East London. Her most recent series of works include a variety of hand-drawn illustration, digital illustration, sculpture and installation work.[5] Her newest collection of digital prints include a previously unseen 39 part-series, as well as new ceramic works, an immersive installation and the full collection of her original hand-drawn illustrations.[5] This third exhibition opened from 12th to 17th October 2018.[5]

Social media

Nor makes use of social media sites, namely Instagram, as a platform to present and expose her artwork with creative freedom and artistic agency.[14] For Nor, Instagram acts as a useful platform for self-publishing and an effective means for her works to get seen.[14] Her trademark devil-human characters are viral due to her 1 million-strong Instagram following.[14] Through social media, Nor inverts the traditional process of emerging artist needing to find galleries to exhibit their work and receive any kind of recognition.[14] Social media platforms also enable a democratisation of art, where Nor’s detailed and thought- provoking drawings of women have been shared continuously on multiple social media platforms, often used as memes on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.[3]
