He happens to be one of the very few academicians in India who came out openly as gay . He has been elected a fellow of West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology in 2016 and received the INSA Teachers Award of Indian National Science Academy in 2017 for his contributions in teaching and research. He is the first openly gay professor in India to receive these honors.
