The presidency of Emmanuel Macron began on 14 May 2012 when the Constitutional Council announced the official results from the presidental election during his inauguration. Macron served alongside prime minister Édouard Philippe.

Background

Economic

Emmanuel Macron started his term when major economic institutes (IMF, OFCE, CEPII) observed a moderate improvement in the world economic situation. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that global growth which is 3.1% in 2016, will increase to 3.4% in 2017 and then 3.6% in 2018. One of the biggest reasons for this is the recovering Chinese import market which has risen after a sharp decline in 2015.[1] The magazine Capital and its contributors have said that the economic outlook for France is positive though others such as Nicolas Brandt have address concerns about the Labor code and the high unemployment rate.[2]

French companies are beginning to do much better on the world stage than in the past[3][4] and have benefitted greatly from the tax credits given to them by the Hollande government. Companies have also benefited from lower oil prices, the euro and lower interest rates.[2] The market has resumed creating employment since 2016 and all analysts estimate that they will continue at least in 2018.[5]

France's economy has grown more attractive to foreign investors and in 2016 saw an increase that hadn't existed since the Presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. An Ernst & Young study conducted in 2016 shown that France was beginning to catch up to the United Kingdom and Germany due to economy being more competitive, costs being lowered and investors being more welcomed. He also explained that the tax credit given to businesses helped in the long term.[6] The growth has mainly come in the digital sector, the health sector and the energy sector.[7]

Foreign Affairs

Following the UK's vote to leave the European Union[8], Macron will have to manage the compromises between French companies and the UK's interests.[2] Macron will also have to declare if he wants to continue the current sanctions on Russia following the Ukraine Crisis or if he plans to amplify them.[9][10]

Macron will also have to deal with the current Greek debt crisis[11] and the raise of far-right parties in other European countries.[12][13][14]

The French military is currently engaged in several military operations notably in Africa with Operation Barkhane[15] and in the Middle East as part of the allied intervention against the Islamic State.[16][17]

Government

Though Macron had said in March 2017 that he wanted a female Prime Minister,[18] he chose the male mayor of Le Havre, Edouard Philippe on 15 May, 2017.[19] Macron indicated that he wanted Philippe to lead the En Marche! campaign in the 2017 Legislative Election,[18] despite Philippe being from another party.
