Priya Sawhney was born in 1989 in Chandigarh, Punjab, India, and is a Sikh immigrant to the USA.[1] She is a co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) and of Compassionate Bay.[2][3] She is currently an elected member of the DxE steering committee and San Francisco Bay core team.[4][5] She is currently one of the lead organizers of Compassionate Bay.[3] One of the actions that Sawhney organized as well as her personal story were the focus of a short documentary in The Intercept, in which she told her story of being called a terrorist mainly because of the color of her skin and for being an immigrant.[6] Prior to her fellowship and work for DxE, Sawhney worked for the Tenderloin Housing Clinic.[7][8][9] She organized protests for the Tenderloin Housing Clinic to advocate for tenant rights.
