Health education

According to Dacher Keltner, in order to improve human health the activity of touch needs to be incorporated into different forms of therapy.[2] Physical touch releases endorphins and oxytocin in the body, which improves a person's overall health. Affectionate touch helps the release of oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin also helps relax the body, because it causes a decrease in heart rate. It also decreases the release of cortisol and norepinephrine, which are stress hormones. In turn oxytocin increases the levels of serotonin and dopamine, which is why doing things that release oxytocin makes a person feel good. The release of oxytocin can be very beneficial to people who suffer from mental illnesses, such as depression.

According to neuro-constructivists regarding the brain and its neural structures there is change and development that occurs in response to the experiences we endure.[3] These experiences can be good or bad, just like a little stress can be good or bad. The problem comes when the experiences humans have are so bad and traumatic enough to affect the health, well-being, and ultimately the person's existence here on earth.

Naturally, a hug makes people feel good and unfortunately most people don't get enough hugs if any at all. In other cases some family members are very distant and weren't raised to show affection. Hugging is good for people's physical and mental health. It is one of an important aspect of human interaction. There are studies to show that patients with Alzheimer's disease get more relaxed, make more of an emotional connection with others, and their symptoms of depression are reduced by receiving “touch therapy” or “massage therapy”.[4]

The idea that human touch can prolong a person's life evolved from the idea that human touch improves a person's health. So it's safe to say that a person that's happier and healthier has a better chance to live longer than a person who is not so happy and not so healthy.

Accredited professionals are equipped with the resources to reach those in need. It's a non-sexual experience, strictly platonic, and more of a mother-child experience or nurturing. Professional cuddlers that are specifically trained in this therapy are hired to provide this experience to anyone interested.[5] Sessions should be catered to each individual and their differences.
