The Progressor Times is a local newspaper in Carey, Ohio. This newspaper is owned by current editor/publisher Steve Zander[1] . It's service area is the town of Carey. Its circulation rate is one paper per week[2].

History

The newspaper was originally founded on May 8, 1873 by Frank and Will Tripp. It was originally named The Carey Times. The brothers ran it for 20 years until it was bought by Homer Thrall in 1893. From there, Thrall's Daugther, Eloise, took ownership and the paper belonged to the Thrall family for 60 years[3].

Afterwards, the paper had many owners. Herbert and Meryellen Miller ran the paper for 11 years and sold it to Leon Davenport in 1964. Davenport then sold it to Marjorie Patton in 1966, who then later named her son, Michael, as editor. In July 10, 1968, another paper called the Carey Progressor published its first issue. This paper was founded by Steve Zender. The Times and the Progressor competited for 3 years until Zender purchased it and combined the two papers to create the Progressor Times[4].

The Progressor Times have had many different names. It was first called the Carey Weekly Times, and then was called the Wyandot times only for period in 1878. Afterwards, it was was known as the Carey Times until the year 1971, the year it acquired its current title[5].

Death has also been associated with founding of the Progressor Times. When the paper published its first issue, it lead to the death of Roswell Perry, Carey's village clerk at that time. Perry picked up one of the first copies of the paper and was reading it. This caused him to accidentally fall 10 - 12 feet from the second floor to the first, killing him[6].

Coverage

The Progressor Times primarily covers local news, business, and sports[7]. It also covers events happening in the community[8].
