Prohor Račanin (Bajina Bašta, c. 1600 - Belgrade, 9 January 1676) was an influential Serbian monk and writer of the seventeenth century.

When the last Rača man, Prohor Račanin died in Belgrade in 1676, a document describing his funeral which took place on a bitterly cold January day, two Patriarchs and six Metropolitans officiated in the ceremony and that his death "left the Serbs of Belgrade to cry deeply". This solemn funeral of this worthy Serbian scholar simultaneously shut the last Serbian Scriptorium of the School of Rača in that region.

Monasteries: bastions of learning

Monks played a significant role during that period, but perhaps the most important and far-reaching one was that of the keepers of knowledge. Serbian monasteries became the repository for manuscripts. It was in the monasteries that classical learning, literature, music and art survived for centuries. In the process they became less a refuge from the world and more a power within it.
