On September 29, 2018 female-led demonstrations took place around the world. They were protesting the presidential candidacy of former military officer Jair Bolsonaro from the Social Liberal Party (PSL). 160 cities in Brazil participated in all 26 states and the Federal District. In addition, 50 other cities throughout the world marched on that day (Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, New York, Buenos Aires etc). It is now considered the biggest protest led by women in Brazil.

Throughout his career, Bolsonaro has also been accused of being homophobic and racist against dark-skinned people. Brazil has the largest African population outside of Africa, many citizens were angered by these remarks.[1] Bolsonaro also threatened democracy by stating that he 'will not accept any other results in the election.' He had also previously stated that the voting machine results can be altered.[2]

The Facebook page "Mulheres contra Bolsonaro" (Women against Bolsonaro) was used to communicate with other women that were interested in protesting. It amassed over 1 million participants by the 12th of September, and 2 million by the 16th of September. The hashtag #EleNão or #NotHim, was used to express disapproval of Bolsonaro's misogyny and threats to democracy. Citizens and celebrities from around the world used the hashtag in protest on social media, mainly Twitter and Facebook. #EndFascism was also trending because of Bolsonaro's threats to freedom.[3]

A counter protest was organized in response to the #EleNão movement. On the 29th and 30th of September, people throughout Brazil created a movement called #EleSim, or #YesHim, in favor of Bolsonaro. Over 40 cities in 16 states participated, including the capital Brasília.[4]
