1 in every 5 children are born with some form of learning disability. And that 1 kid out of the 5 is three times more likely to drop out of high school. Yet, schools all across the country are just sitting back and watching these children struggle and fail when they could jump in to help. They offer help to all different kinds of students with different backgrounds and needs. Offering help to those who need financial aid, emotional support, or physical disabilities. But when students need help with the one thing they go to school everyday for, they will not have a lot of places to turn to for help. Yeah you can go talk to a counselor or a teacher but all they are going to do is tell that student how to be successful. They are never willing to get their hands dirty and really work with these kids to change their habits and make them better students. Kids with learning disabilities go to school everyday and have to find a way to make themselves successful everyday. I think schools should atleast offer an after school class or study time for students with learning disabilities where they can go and really get the help they need in order to be successful. And in this class or study hour you could have the students remove all distractions and focus only on the teacher. Teach them ways to make themselves better organized, teach them how to make better use of their time in school or after school, and how to overall become a better student even though they have a disability. Many schools have some programs already in place for children with learning disabilities. To prevent unnecessary referrals for a learning disability, a Response to Intervention or RTI is provided. After the RTI, if the student truly has a learning disability, they get evaluated by a neuropsychologist and receive an Individualized Education Program, or IEP. Students with learning disabilities will receive recommendations for services. These services may include an Integrated Co-Teaching, or ICT, classroom, service providers, such as a speech-language therapist, or other accommodations, such as audiobooks or testing accommodations.According to mastersed.uc.edu, the top 5 most common learning disabilities among students are as follows: dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and dysphasia. Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence. Dyscalculia is a severe difficulty in making arithmetical calculations, as a result of brain disorder. Dysgraphia is the inability to write coherently, as a symptom of brain disease or damage. Dyspraxia is the difficulty performing particular purposive actions, as a result of brain damage. Dysphasia is a language disorder marked by deficiency in the generation of speech, and sometimes also in its comprehension, due to brain disease or damage.
