Quantum chess is a chess variant devised by graduate student Chris Cantwell with the aim of introducing the principles of quantum mechanics to a broad audience on an intuitive level.

Rules

In general, the rules of quantum chess are precisely those of orthodox chess, differing only in the absence of checkmate and in the existence of the so-called quantum move, further elucidated below.

The quantum move

At players' discretion, a turn may consist either of a standard move, taken as in orthodox chess, or of a quantum move: an equal chance of two moves with the same piece or none at all, to be resolved only in the case of a conflict (i.e. a possible capture). Although this mechanic seems simple at first glance, it results in a profound change as regards strategy, in that it introduces a fluctuating element of chance.

In effect, a player undertaking a quantum move "splits the timeline" into one "universe" where he moved twice, and another where he forfeited his move. If he takes another quantum move with the same piece, he splits the timeline again, for a total of one universe where he moved four times, one where he moved twice, and two where he passed his turn. The only information available to the player, at this point, is the chance that his pieces are located where they are (as a percentage, progress bar, or otherwise).

In case of conflict (i.e., two pieces contend for one square), a "measurement" event occurs, and the "universes" generated by the succession of quantum moves are merged into one. For instance, if a 50%-present pawn conflicts with a 100%-present knight, a coin is flipped, and the knight is captured if the coin turns up heads. A more complex measurement would occur if the knight were also 50% present; in this case, there would be a 25% case of capture, 25% case of knight possession (pawn did not occupy the square in "prime universe"), 25% case of pawn possession, and 25% case of no possession (empty square in "prime universe").

Strategy

A strong player (that is, one favoured to win) is advised to make orthodox moves, and thus maximise element of skill; conversely, a weak player is advised to move in quantum-fashion, emphasising the element of chance.
