Ralph Allen was born (1926) in Raunds, England and graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1953). In 1957, he arrived at Queen’s University with a young family and artistic credentials, to begin a long career in fine art education. This career included becoming the director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre (1963–72),[1] Professor of Art in the Fine Arts department (1972–87),[2] and finally Professor Emeritus on his retirement in 1987. His work in the 1990s was in partnership with the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) at Queen’s Faculty of Education, and he taught on reserves in Moose Factory and Kasabonika in 1995. CareerAllen pursued his artistic career exhibiting widely in the early days with 15 shows prior to 1973,[3] receiving several Canada Council grants, gaining critical attention through venues such as Canadian Art magazine, and entering important collections across North America (National Gallery of Canada,[4] Hirschorn Collection, Art Gallery of Ontario, and many university, private and corporate collections). Allen did not show his work again until after his retirement, with four shows of new works in the early 1990's.
