Gurdaspur City Protest/ BandhBrar, whose tenure as SSP Gurdaspur lasted less than 100 days, had earned kudos from the residents for bringing down the crime rate in the town which had become a safe haven for petty criminals, including chain-snatchers. Allegedly, he had displeased local political leaders for his apolitical style of functioning leading to his premature transfer[1].On August 6, 2012 hundreds of advocates in Gurdaspur abstained from work, chemists downed shutters and local residents staged protests in various parts of the town, insisting that the state government should take back the transfer orders of SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar.Three youths threatened to immolate themselves if the authorities did not give in to their demand within 24 hours[2] . Tenure at Bathinda[3]Brar managed to bring down the crime graph to a great extent in Bathinda. Under his operation cleanup, which was launched after his joining on October 15, 2013, he got one DSP, two SHOs, a DTO along with his staff members and middlemen, arrested for different anomalies. The WASP unit, women helpline and Eagle Squad were witnessed during his stint.Ravcharan is famous for spending extra hours at his office where he meets the complainants and informers for a patient hearing. Apart from the vigil, the blind murder case of a woman, who died after a bullet hit her head in a hotel, on Karva Chauth night was cracked, the murder of a man killed by unidentified persons in Uria Basti was also traced under the supervision of Brar. The encounter of two jail inmates who flee from a police van while returning from Panchkula after killing a cop was also done on the directions of Brar. Two incidents of lawyers’ protest were witnessed during Brar’s stint in Bathinda due to the arrest of the son of a senior lawyer and SGPC member. |
