RedR Australia [https://www.redr.org.au] (pronounced 'Red R') is an international humanitarian response agency that selects, trains and deploys technical personnel to disaster and conflict affected communities..[1]. Its mission is to build resilience and relieve suffering during times of international disaster[2].

RedR Australia provides surge support to United Nations (UN) agencies during international crises[3] and is the only [https://www.standbypartnership.org/ UN Standby Partner] in the Asia Pacific[4][5]. RedR Australia is a Standby Partner to 11 UN agencies including the World Health Organisation (WHO)[6] , UN Women[7], and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)[8].

RedR Australia is also an internationally recognised provider of humanitarian training[9][10].

History

RedR Australia was established in 1992 by engineer Jeff Dobel who called on his industry peers to apply their skills to international disaster relief efforts.[11] The four founding bodies of RedR Australia are Engineers Australia, [https://www.ipwea.org/home Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia], [https://www.consultaustralia.com.au/ Consult Australia] and Professionals Australia. Over the last decade, the organisation has evolved to include personnel from a broader range of industries[11].

Activities

Australia Assists

It involves a Standby Roster of readily deployable technical personnel.[12] Persons are deployed to disaster and conflict affected areas worldwide, including in Africa, Europe, the Middle East[13], Asia[14][15] and the Pacific[16].

Standby Roster

RedR Australia maintains a Standby Roster of 700 technical personnel across 71 skillsets[17] that allows United Nations agencies, international non-government organisations and the Australian Government to access skilled personnel during a humanitarian crisis.

Persons on the roster have completed humanitarian training and come from fields including water and sanitation, engineering, nutrition, shelter, logistics, public health, protection, information management, project management and communications[18]

Humanitarian Training

RedR Australia is a provider of internationally recognised humanitarian training[9][10]. RedR provides a foundation course of essential knowledge for working within the humanitarian sector[19]. In 2018, RedR Australia partnered with Australian first aid training provider [https://www.realresponse.com.au/ Real Response] to provide Hostile Environment Awareness Training to prepare individuals and organisations travelling and working in hostile environments around the world[20][21]. RedR Australia also provides training in child protection[22], water, sanitation and hygiene[23] and humanitarian logistics[24] for emergency settings.
