Reza Bundy (born April, 1972) is an Iranian-American technology and social impact entrepreneur. Bundy is the founder and former CEO of IronPlanet, a leading online inspection-based marketplace focused on the $100 billion used capital goods market.[1]. Ironplanet was sold in 2017 for $758m and funded by Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins and Caterpillar[1]

Early life and family

Reza Bundy was born in Teheran, Iran. He is the son of Rodman Bundy.[2], a leading expert in public international law, with over thrity-five years of experience as counsel and advocate in high profile public international law litigations and international commercial and investment arbitrations at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Bundy spent his early years in Iran amongst American diplomats and foreign policy leaders. His godfather, Kenneth Taylor was the Canadian ambassador to Iran, best known for his role in the 1979 covert operation called the "Canadian Caper". With the cooperation of the American Central Intelligence Agency, Taylor helped six Americans escape from Iran during the Iran hostage crisis[3] captured in the movie Argo[4]

When the 1979 revolution broke out in Teheran, Bundy left Iran with his family to New York, London and then later attended the American School of Paris.

Education and early career

Bundy attended School of Oriental and African studies, University of London, where he majored in international studies[1].

Bundy also worked as a research associate at the Harvard Business School to Professor Michael Porter. His focus was to assess opportunities and research potential market opportunities for US companies in Eastern Europe[5].

Early in his career, Bundy worked for the Economist Intelligence Unit, the business unit within the Economist group, providing forecasting and advisory services through research and analysis[5].

Bundy continued his career in journalism and media, focusing on security and the Middle East for the International Herald Tribune and then later for ABC News[5].

Bundy became one of the lead research analysts at Bain Willard Companies (founded by Bill Bain of Bain & Co), where he researched and evaluated investment opportunities across a broad range of industries[5]

Career

Reza Bundy was an Entrepreneur in Residence at the Silicon Valley VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Accel Partners before founding IronPlanet[1].

Founded in 1999, Bundy’s goal was to transform the global used equipment market through innovation and technology[6] IronPlanet is now the leading online inspection-based marketplace focused on the $100 billion used capital goods market and has a database of more than 1.8 million registered users worldwide. Early investors of the company was Caterpillar and Kleiner Perkins. IronPlanet was acquired by Ritchie Bros. in June 2017 for $758 million[7].

Following IronPlanet, Bundy founded and served as the CEO of Mota Motors, a leader in the automotive products and services sector[8]. The company offers online vehicle certification and selling platform services[1].

Bundy founded Provence Capital[9], a private development company focusing on producing high-quality jobs and social infrastructure in markets where economic opportunities are non-negotiable necessities. The company leverage technology to build capacity in governments, equipping policymakers and commercial businesses with analytical tools to make better decisions. Their mission is to create social value without compromising economic returns[10]. He has developed projects in Gabon, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Cuba, Iran and Haiti.

Social impact work

Rand Corporation African First Ladies

As part of the Rand Corporation, Bundy funded[11]the African First Ladies Fellowship Program, which, in partnership with Women’s Campaign International, aims to strengthen the capacity of Africa’s first ladies and their offices to address health and social problems across Africa. The program helps first ladies and their staffs develop skills for managing an effective first lady’s office and learn practical policy analysis techniques[12]

Haiti investment team

After the January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake, Bundy founded the Haiti Investment Team, focused on facilitating foreign investments to accelerate the rebuilding and growth of the country[13]

Atlantic Council

Bundy is also a current board member of the Atlantic Council[14] an organization that promotes constructive leadership and engagement in international affairs[15]
