R.G. Barry Corporation is a developer and marketer of footwear, handbags, and foot care products, founded by Florence Melton, Aaron Zacks, and Harry Streim in 1945 in Columbus, Ohio.^[1] . R.G. Barry is most well-known for its’ brand Dearfoams, a maker of foam insole slippers. Currently, R.G. Barry Corporation is headquartered in Pickerington, Ohio.^[2]

History

R.G. Barry was founded in 1945 as “Shoulder Moulders Co”, a maker of slippers, bathrobes, and pillows. Two years later, the partners changed the company name to R.G. Barry in reference to their children ^[3]. In 1949, R.G. Barry released Angel Treads, the first foam-cushioned, washable slipper, as one of their featured products. The Dearfoams slipper brand was introduced in 1958, and has grown into the company’s flagship brand. Following the launch of Dearfoams, R.G. Barry added operations in Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, and New York, in an effort to boost company business. R.G. Barry went public in 1962.

Following a reorganization effort in the 1980s, Dearfoams launched a line of mens slippers and redesigned its womens line with an emphasis on “giftability” ^[4]. R.G. Barry also broadened its retail distribution, branching out from department stores to mass merchandisers like Kmart and Wal-Mart.

Baggallini, a Milwaukee-based maker of handbags and travel accessories, was acquired by R.G. Barry Corporation in March 2011 in a $33.8M deal^[5]. The travel-centric fashion brand has recently opened a number of stores in airports across the United States, including Pittsburgh International Airport ^[6] and Charlotte Douglas International Airport^[7]

As of September 3, 2014, R.G. Barry has been taken private^[8]. In 2017, Bob Mullaney, former COO of Shoes..com was named the CEO of R.G. Barry Corporation ^[9]

Public Relations

In January 2019, Dearfoams donated over $465,000 ^[10] in slippers with a ‘buy one, give one’ giveback campaign alongside Ronald McDonald House Charities.
