BiographyRhona Rauszer was born in Liverpool 3 January 1911 to an English father and a Scottish mother from the Isle of Skye. During her youth she lived in both England and Skye, her maternal home always having a strong pull on her and to which she would always return.[1] Not formally educated, yet wanting to be a film star, she became an actress, worked with the Citizens Theatre and toured abroad. During the second world war Rhona served as a "wren" and she married Kazik, a Polish war veteran and inventor, in 1948. Together, they restored and sailed a boat named Pythagoras, taking with them a Yorkshire Terrier - one of Rhona's favourites. Upon his death Rhona returned to Skye, living first in Idrigill, Uig, then later at Lusa, near Breakish. She drew folk scenes in smoke on plates, and oil landscapes which she sold locally.[1] When she became blind she dictated stories into a tape recorder, folk tales, mostly local in origin, (coloured with her wit) and which, with the help of an editor, were published. The first collection, Consider an Island (published Birlinn 2004) was shortlisted for the Saltire award.[2] It was followed by a second collection The Light Fantastic, then her autobiography Ultima Thule. A fitting finale to a creative life. Rhona died on 2nd November 2006, and is buried next to her husband in Broadford graveyard.
