Richard A.R. White (born 1955), Order of Australia Medal, Justice of Peace, Canberra Richard Andrew Roland White was born in South Australia, 21st November 1955, son of Ian Thomas White (a pathologist and biochemist for Commonwealth Dept. Health) and Lydia de Julia (a nurse). Richard has two siblings, an older sister (1954) and a younger brother (1964). At a young age, Richard moved with his family to Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia where he and his family lived on East Point Road in Fannie Bay from March 1958 till December 1974. Richard attended Darwin High school and during his final years, he worked at BP Parap for John Lillibridge where he had worked after school and weekends for the service station; this was when he met a group of men who were sandblasters from Whyalla Shipyards. Richard was offered a situation drying sand and small sandblasting jobs at the Winnellie show grounds in Darwin. After school he would drive to the show grounds and work till late. Richard along with his foreman commenced blasting the interior of barges which were only accessible to blast in the morning, as in the late afternoons it was not possible due to the heat. They would also work on buoys and steel pylons along with the many bulk fuel storage tanks at RAAF Base Darwin. Richard worked with Victor Fishwick, Joseph Taccori and their foreman Barry Medley along with others in all for just over three and a half years. Richard left Darwin for Canberra (vacation) in November 1974 in order to commence with Hooper Constructions (later Barclay Brothers, due to takeover) in the New Year. This employment was short lived given cyclone Tracy. Richard, went to work for Australian Department of Works, in Canberra where he was employed to carry out drilling and coring samples for the department using Cralias and Fox drill rigs, this work he carried out for just over two years. Richard met his wife, Christine J (Lindner) a nursing sister in August 1975 soon after they married and have two adult sons, born in 1982 and 1985. Richard & Christine have two grandchildren, a grand-daughter and a grandson. In early 1977 Richard went to work in Real Estate. In May 1985 he opened, with close friend (John Clifford Drinkwater-ex Naval Captain) Prime Real Estate. Later John retired to Sydney. Due to Richard’s now declining health (silicosis), in December 1997 Richard sold the commercial branch of the business to Knight Frank International and the management rights to LJ Hookers International. Richard was diagnosed with Silicosis of the lungs by Prof. David Hamilton Bryant of St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in 1993 and later confirmed by surgery on 20th September 2000 where Richard underwent open lung surgery at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne performed by Prof. Trevor Williams and Mr. Adrian Pick, surgeon and pathologist. After recovery from surgery in early 2001 Richard placed advertisements around Australia in various news papers and was contacted by many hundreds of people, having regard to dust‘s and toxic exposures, in work place settings. Then with the assistance of Prof. Thomas Faunce, PhD Medicine & PhD Law and along with many specialist physicians, industrial work-safe professionals and coupled with Senator Gary Humphries (Lib.) and Senator Lyn Alison (Dem.) they pressed for an Australian Senate Inquiry into toxic dusts, welding rod fumes, nano particles, pesticides and all other industrial hazardous dusts. At the Inquiry Richard represented 1,187 names before the Australian Senate, whose findings were published on 31st May 2006. Since that time and previously Richard has an involvement with Past Member Planetary Society and the Lord Baden Powell Society. Current involvement includes: The Lung Foundation of Australia, St James Ethic Centre, Lung Life Group, Convenor Australian Dust Diseases Coalition, Media Minds Pty Ltd, Michael West, A Start in Life, The Salvation Army, The Gideon’s International, Friend of the ABC, Member Menzies Group, WFM, Global Institute of Policy, ANU School of Medicine, The Garvan Institute, Friend’s of the National Library, Red Cross, Justices of the Peace Association, ACT Magistrates Court, St Kilda FC, Royal Free Benevolent Institution, St John’s Ambulance Australia, Feeding the needy (over 30 years ACT), Institute of Public Administration of Australia, Clare Holland House (Palliative Care), Royal Institute for Deaf & Blind Children, Kids Cancer Project, Barnardo’s Aust, Saint John’s Church Reid ACT, Royal Overseas League Richard is member of a great many Fraternal Orders, He also maintains a special study with the emphasis on Egyptology.
