Richard Dunn Marks III was born in Charlottesville, Virginia to Richard Dunn Marks II, a physician, and Patricia Boggs Marks. He has an older sister, Melissa, and a younger sister, Anne. Marks Jr. moved the family to Charleston, South Carolina in 1973 to join the Medical University of South Carolina. Marks married Margi and had three children with her; Richard, Morgan, and Louise. Richard Marks III completed the South Carolina general contractors exam in 1984. In 1985 he graduated with a BS in construction management from the College of Architecture at Clemson University. At Clemson, he completed one semester of studies in Italy, with a focus on European conservation and restoration. In 1985, Marks started Richard Marks Restorations Inc. He worked towards a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania for two years and received a certificate in 1995. At the University of Pennsylvania, he focused on architectural conservation and researching historic building techniques. He currently serves on an alumni advisory board for historic structures at Clemson University and is working in Charleston to start a graduate center in Historic Preservation for Clemson. He is a trustee for The Historic Charleston Foundation and an advisor for many other nonprofit, preservation and community organizations. Today, Richard Marks Restoration has preservation and documentation consultants as well as over thirty full-time carpenters, masons, plasterers, and decorative craftspeople. His facilities include workshops for cabinetry, millwork, stone, plaster casting, and a lab for analytical conservation examination and research. Richard Marks Restorations Inc. Started in 1985. The list of services the company provides includes consulting (analytical investigation, documentation, research, material testing, planning & recommendations) and contracting trades (carpentry, millwork, decorative plaster, painting, specialty finishes, composition ornament, brick masonry & stonework).

Some of Marks most notable work includes Fort Sumpter National Monument, Drayton Hall, The Old Citadel at Marian Square, Fort Moultrie, The Nathaniel Russel House, The Fireproof Building, The City Market Hall, Old Saint Andrew’s Church, Christ Church- Mt. Pleasant, 14 Lagare Street. Professional Organizations, Licensing & Awards he has one are from 1984 to the present day he is an S.C. General Contractor. From 1997 to the present day he is an S.C. Residential Home Builder. From 1992 to the present day he is an American Institute for Conservation. In 1998 he received the Samuel Gailliard Stoney Conservation, Craftsmanship Award from the Historic Charleston Foundation. From 1985 to the present day he has been awarded 16 Carolopolis & Promerita awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston. In 2009 he received the AIA national award for 21 Legare Street restoration Community Service. From 1991 to 1997 he served on the Sullivan’s Island Cultural Center Board & Park Foundation Board. He has served from 1995 to the present day on the Clemson University’s Alumni Advisory Board for Historic Buildings. From 1998 until 2006 he was a Trustee for The Charleston Day School. From 2001 until 2010 he was a Trustee for Historic Charleston Foundation.

Documentaries and Television Series he’s been a part of are the 1994 “ Home Again with Bob Vila “ - nine episodes following the restoration of 54 Montagu Street, 60 Montagu Street, the Aiken-Rhett House, The Nathaniel Russell House, 6 Thomas and Milford Plantation, As well as the 2006 SCETV “ Drayton Hall: Preserving a National Treasure”.
