Richard KaplanRichard James Kaplan was a noted documentary film and television writer, director, and producer. He was born in Manhattan on January 3, 1925 to Benjamin Kaplan and Natalie (nee Blaustein) Kaplan. He was raised in the Rockaways in Queens. He died on September 29, 2018 in Manhattan.[1][2] Richard enrolled at Antioch College at the age of 16 but was was drafted into the Army during World War II, interrupting his studies for three years. He graduated from Antioch after his discharge and studied film at the University of Southern California.[3][4] Kaplan began making films in the 1950s commissioned by clients such as U.S. Air Force to the Indian Handicrafts Commission.[5] He directed the 1965 biography The Eleanor Roosevelt Story, produced by Sidney Glazier, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.[6][7] He also produced the 1970 Oscar-nominated documentary A Filmed Record... Montgomery to Memphis in collaboration with Ely Landau two years after the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
