Pre-American LifeRicardo Jorge Lanken was born in the modern day Santa Catarina state of Brazil on September 8, 1901. He spent his early life in a household of eight; his mother Maria Lanken and his father, Hans Lanken, and 4 sister along with three brothers. His father was a second generation German immigrant to Brazil and was a economic relation's adviser to the Brazilian Government but his career was tarnished when Brazil cut diplomatic ties with the German Empire in 1917 due to his German ancestry. (see Brazil during World War I). Soon after this happened, the Lanken family faced an economic crisis and they were forced to foreclose on their new home in 1918 and move into Ricardo Lanken's mother's parents estate. Ricardo felt betrayed by his country for disowning his father and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina after both his parents died in a car accident in 1924. ReferencesGeorge L. Richardson.
