CareerNelson's undergraduate studies were at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his masters at the University of Indiana, where he studied with Don Erb and David Baker, and his doctorate from Columbia University (1995), studying with Mario Davidovsky, George Edwards, and Martin Boykan. [2] He additionally studied at the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop with Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam. He has been a fellow at MacDowell, Yaddo, and VCCA. [3] In addition to leading his own groups, Nelson has been guitarist and a contributing composer to the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra for over two decades. His recent compositional work, frequently for large ensembles such as Aardvark and his own New York-based Makrokosmos Orchestra[4], is characterized by a merging of contemporary jazz and classical practices. Reviewer Dave Wayne (All About Jazz) called his multi-movement large ensemble piece “Pursuit” “a distinctive synthesis of modern jazz, and contemporary orchestral music,” calling Nelson “an ambitious and daring composer.” [5] Nelson’s contemporary classical works have been performed by ALEA III, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Duo “2”, pianist Bridget Convey, and the Portland Piano Trio, among others.
