She studied literature at Waseda University and received her Master’s degree in Film and TV Production from Loyola Marymount University. Her debut work Snow Flower won the Yahoo! JAPAN literature prize and was adapted into a short film. She is the author of several works of fiction. The Dark Maidens has also been adapted into a movie.[1]

Literary influences

Akiyoshi's early inspirations include Camus, Kafka, and Osamu Dazai; discovering them when she was 11 years old and influencing her to pursue writing as a career.[2]

  • The story was initially serialized in Futabasha's Shōsetsu Suiri magazine, from October 2012 through January 2013[8], before being published as a novel in June 2013.[9][10][11]
