Overview

Robert A. Creo is an attorney, author, arbitrator, mediator, and educator. He has 40 years of experience in the dispute resolution field.[1] He has served as a neutral arbitrator or mediator in thousands of employment, personal injury, medical malpractice, construction, family business, and commercial dispute cases since 1979.[2] His case experience encompasses acting as a special settlement counsel or a consultant for both plaintiffs and defendants in complex matters and catastrophic loss claims. He has been retained as an expert witness to offer opinions on negotiation and settlement processes.[3]

Creo writes a column in The PA Lawyer magazine of the Pennsylvania Bar Association called “The Effective Lawyer."[1] He is an Adjunct Professor at the Duquesne University School of Law. Currently, he teaches a course on decision making for lawyers alongside Selina J. Shultz.[4]

Creo co-founded the International Academy of Mediators, the Master Mediator Institute, and Mediators Beyond Borders.[4] He is also a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.[2] He is on the roster of several appointing agencies, such as the American Arbitration Association, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and the National Mediation Board.[4]  He has been active in the Allegheny County Bar Association and Pennsylvania Bar Association, where he has held offices in the Labor and Employment Law and ADR sections and committees.[5]

Additionally, Creo manages several businesses and projects in the legal field, including Happy Effective Lawyer.[6]

Career

After graduating from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis in 1977 and Brandeis University in 1974, Robert A. Creo worked for two years in a corporate law department. In 1979, he started a private law practice in Pittsburgh. At the same time, he apprenticed as a labor arbitrator.[5] In 1986, he was admitted to the National Academy of Arbitrators and he started to supplement his Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practice with mediation.[4]

Creo was a salary arbitrator for the Major League Baseball & Major League Baseball Players Association from 1991-1999[5], as well as an arbitrator for the National Football League from 1997-1999.[7]

He served as an Independent Hearing Officer for the United States Senate Select Committee on Ethics with the Office of Fair Employment Practices from 1995-1998.[4][5]

He was the founding President of the International Academy of Mediators in 1997.[1] In 1998, he became a mediator for the Court of Arbitration for Sports, (TAS-CAS) where he continues to be on the roster of mediators.[8] In 2006, he was the co-founder and Secretary-Treasurer of Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI), a non-profit organization which brings together mediators and students to work in communities traumatized by civil war and violence.[9]

Companies

Robert A. Creo is the founder and owner of Happy Effective Lawyer. Happy Effective Lawyer was created in 2017.[6] Happy Effective Lawyer offers online distance learning and onsite courses, videos, educational resources, and a blog. Robert A. Creo is the primary educator, and he features guest lecturers and authors from the legal field. An affiliated organization, the Effective Lawyer Institute, provides certificates for lawyers who complete courses and pass the exams offered through Happy Effective Lawyer.[6]

Creo is also the founder of Impartial Dispute Resolution Services[10], an organization that is certified by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board[11] to offer workshops for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.

Teaching & Mentoring

Creo was an Adjunct Professor at Duquesne University School of Law from 1991–2003 and from 2013 to present.[4] He currently co-teaches a course on decision making.[12] He was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law from 2001–2012, he was an Adjunct Professor at Chatham University between 2007-2015.[13]

In 2006 he created a Fellowship to honor Harvard law professor Frank E.A. Sander, who was one of the founders of the modern ADR movement.[14] Cassandra Georges, a law graduate of the University of Pennsylvania was awarded a year-long paid internship with Robert A. Creo to apprentice with him as an arbitrator and mediator.  Cassandra has continued her work as a neutral in Philadelphia and as a strong advocated for diversity in the legal profession.[15]

Robert A. Creo has served on the Board of Advisors for the Center for International Legal Education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law since 2000. Each summer he sponsors an observation externship where an LLM graduate who is a lawyer from another country attends hearings and mediation sessions. Over the years, this has included lawyers from Brazil, China, Cyprus, Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other countries with different legal systems.[16]

Creo presents on ADR[4] and other topics[1] such as ethics, decision making, and neuroscience at seminars conducted by bar associations (ABA, ACBA, PBA, PBI), universities, CPR, and other organizations.

Awards and achievements

Creo has been named in Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers and recognized in the field of ADR annually, dating back to 2007.[4][17] Marquis Who’s Who honored Creo with a lifetime achievement recognition in 2017.[5] Best Lawyers in America named Robert A. Creo the ADR Attorney in 2017 and Mediator of the Year in 2014 for Western Pennsylvania.[18][2]

Creo was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship by the U.S. State Department to teach ADR in Serbia in 2005 to law students and lawyers.[19][5]

On May 10, 2018, the Pennsylvania Bar Association presented Creo with the Sir Francis Bacon Award on behalf of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.[20]

Publications

Robert A. Creo has authored several articles and publications.[1]

His column, The Effective Lawyer, is published in the bi-monthly PA Lawyer magazine of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. They have published over 20 of Creo’s articles.[21]

Creo writes a monthly column, The Master Mediator for Alternatives, which is published by the International Institute for Conflict Resolution & Prevention in their CPR Alternatives newsletter.[22] He has published over 60 articles in their publication on all aspects of the mediation process.[8]

He authored a 1600 page treatise called Alternative Dispute Resolution: Law Procedure and Commentary for the Pennsylvania Practitioner (George T. Bisel Company, Inc., October 2006).[23]

Personal Life

Creo currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has three children and two grandchildren.[24][25] Creo regularly performs at the local Moth show at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh and other cities.[26] In October 2018, he advances to a regional GrandSLAM competition in Pittsburgh.[27]
