Roberto Terracini (Turin, 6 January 1900 - Turin, 15 July 1976) was an Italian sculpture.

Biography

Born from a family of Jewish origins, he studied sculpture at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where later on he became head professor of model sculpture. In his youth he spent some years in Rome, where he attended the English Academy. Since 1921 he carried out his artistic activity in Turin, participating in the most important national exhibitions[1].

In 1938 he married Adele Böhm, but that was also the year of the infamous racial laws that alienated Jews from the public life. In 1943 Adele and Roberto had to escape from Turin and they found refugee with a false identity in Val Pellice, first in Luserna San Giovanni, and then in Rorà, a small high mountain village[2]. The family was hosted by local farmers, that covered the real identity of Terracini running great risks[3]. During the period of clandestinity, he couldn't sculpt because was not easy to hide sculptures, but he realised many drawings of peasant and partisan life that he kept secretly inside a wall[4].

With the end of the war Terracini resumed his sculpture activity in Turin returning to exhibit all over Piedmont. In 1951 he went for work to the newborn State of Israel; in 1953 he was in Soviet Union with an Italian culture delegation. From 1952 to 1973 he actively devoted himself to teaching sculpture. He was invited several times at the Venice Biennale, at the Quadriennale in Rome, at the international exhibitions in Florence, Berlin, Budapest, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires[5]. His artworks are now part of worldwide private collections[6].
