Madison attended East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated with honors in mathematics and science at age 17. In June of 1940, he enrolled into the School of Architecture At Howard University, but withdrew to serve as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was the first African-American to graduate from Case Western's School of Architecture. Madison entered Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in 1951, and received his Masters Degree in Architecture in 1952.[1][2]

After graduating, Madison returned to [[Howard University]] to teach architectural design and site planning, However, shortly thereafter, Madison was one of 240 Americans selected as a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship through the U.S. Educational Exchange Program to study abroad. He was the first African American to be selected for this scholarship. In September 1952, Madison sailed to Paris and enrolled in the Ecole des Breaux Arts, where for nine months he studied urban design.

In December of that same year, Madison was blown out of the Jeep he was driving by German artillery. U.S. soldiers at an outpost near by would save Madison's life after receiving shrapnel in his stomach and ankle. On July 17, 1954, Madison established the Robert P. Madison International architectural firm in Cleveland, Ohio. This was the first black owned architectural firm in midwestern United States.

The firm struggled financially upon its inception due to the progressive foundation of the company.

In 1957, the firm entered every design competition announced and won Third Prize and Honorable Mention in the Ohio Home Competition. In 1958 the firm's design of the Mount Pleasant Medical Center won best design by the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.

In 1965 the firm was selected to design the U.S. Embassy Office Building in Dakar Senegal, West Africa. Their design won an award and recognition by the U.S. Department of State Foreign Building Operations.
