Rockschool Ltd (RSL) is an examination board launched in 1991 which offers graded music exams for contemporary musicians. It offers diploma (university-level) qualifications in both teaching and performance. The exam board conducts examinations in over 40 countries.

Rockschool has been described as "a highly regarded global specialist awarding body (UK) for musicians and performers who are keen to hone their skills".[1]

{{quote|By working in conjunction with major record labels, music publishers and the best session musicians in the UK, they have created a complete graded music syllabus that allows students to learn (from Grade 0 -8) while playing the latest songs from acts such as Adele, Taylor Swift, The Foo Fighters, Metallica and Dianna Krall.

The syllabus is recognised in Australia by AMEB (Australian Music Education Board) and for the first time offers you the chance to enjoy learning music without ever having to play classical or antiquated music pieces.[1]}}

Contemporary Arts Examinations

Music

RSL offers a wide range of graded music qualifications such as Rockschool Drums, Bass, Electric guitar, acoustic guitar, Singing, piano and keys, ukulele and Music theory. The grading system ranges from Grade 1 to Grade 8 with difficulty increasing at each level. Grades 6,7 and 8 allow each candidate to earn UCAS to aid their university applications.

In September 2016, RSL introduced a graded Music Production exam syllabus..[2] Candidates are graded under three categories - Practical (60%), Theory (25%) and Aural (15%)[2]. Candidates will have the ability to take exams, on Apple's Logic Pro and GarageBand, Ableton Live, Steinberg Cubase and Pro Tools.

As well as graded examinations, RSL offers diplomas in performance and teaching at either level 4 (equivalent first year undergraduate degree) or level 6 (equivalent third year undergraduate degree).

Performance Arts:

RSL offers graded group exams in Musical Theatre, Jazz Dance and Street Dance. Candidates in Musical Theory are judged on three core areas: The performance, demonstration of technical skills and an understanding and reflection. Jazz Dance and Street Dance are judged in core areas of performance and technical exercises. Grades range from beginner (premiere) to advanced (grade 8).

As with music, diplomas in Performance Arts are awarded for teaching at level 4 in Dance and Musical Theatre.

Vocational

RSL offers Vocational qualifications in three key areas between levels 1 and 4 (equivalent of GCSE, A-level and BTEC): Music Practitioners, Creative & Performance Arts and Creative Practitioners. Music Practitioners and Creative & Performance Arts can be taken between levels 1 and 3, whilst Creative Practitioners is level 4 only.

Partnerships

RSL has a longstanding relationship with the The Prince's Trust. RSL is also a member and supports the following organizations: Musicians' Union (UK)[3] and the Incorporated Society of Musicians[4]
