Roman Soldiers and Gear new article content ... The Roman military was vast and powerful. With the help of its tactics and amazingly trained Soldiers, it held such status for over 500 years. '''Training and Pre-combat''' When a solider first was trained, he would take an Oath of loyalty and bravery that would almost never be betrayed. It was the bread and butter of a Roman soldier next to his sword and shield. After he was done with his Oath he would then start training. This would involve running, jumping and carrying large, heavy packs. This would be preparation for marching 18.4 miles in five hours with all their gear on. The Romans would almost never go into combat without setting up a camp and preparing for combat. This would happen every time no matter the circumstances. In the camp they would eat, sleep and prepare and suite up to decimate the enemy A roman Solider was always prepared for battle. The normal Gear that Roman Solider would carry would be a shield made of layers of wood covered in leather and canvas called a scutum. The most common design was eagle wings and a lightning bolt. The wings to represent the Roman Empire and the Lightning bolt to represent Jupiter who would throw lightning bolts. The average Roman soldier would also wear a metal helmet to protect his head. It was made of either brass or bronze with a neck guard. The helmet was held in place with a leather thong. The Roman name for the helmet was a galea. The biggest piece of armor was everything else that covered his body. The rest of the Armor was made of strips of Iron and Leather. The armor was curved to protect the soldier's body from blows that he may sustain in combat. On his back he would carry two javelins that when thrown would bend behind the head. This would drag in front of the enemy shield making movement nearly impossible. It would force the enemy to through his shield away and be defenseless. The last part was a scarf around the neck to stop the armor from rubbing against the neck. This was called a Focale. '''Navy''' The Romans were not the best at navy combat. To give themselves and advantage they used Rams and Carvuses. The rams would be on the front of the ship to break holes in enemy ships to let water sink the ships. To get the advantage in actual fighting, they would use a carvus. This was a drawbridge like creation that would allow the Romans to board an enemy ship and fight in a pseudo land battle in full armor. This helped the Romans get and early start in naval domination. Mounted catapults and ballistae were the primary deck weapons. Unlike most navies in that time, the Romans used lighter ships called triremes, and quadriremes. These built up the main force of the navy. ReferencesExternal links
