Ronald Keith Parker is a psychologist, author, entrepreneur, and artist, as well as a former professor, former actor, and former president of two NASDAQ-listed art companies.

Early Life and Education

Parker was born in Hamlin, Texas (pop. 2,975) to Ann (secretary) and Kenneth (rancher) on September 7, 1939.  He grew up on the Parker Ranch in West Texas, which was sustained by the raising of Hereford cattle while farming cotton and wheat.

After his sophomore year at McMurry University, he hitch-hiked across Europe for eleven months, studying various museum art collections.  He finished his B.A. at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas in 1961.

In 1965, Parker completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Child and Clinical Psychology from Vanderbilt University (TN).

Career (Academia)

Parker’s previous positions include Assistant Professor of Psychology at Florida State University (1965-1969) and Assistant Professor of Psychology at [https://www.gc.cuny.edu/Home The Graduate Center of City University of New York] (1969-1970).

Shortly after he accepted his first academic position at Florida State University, he was recruited by the newly created Office of Child Development in Washington, D.C. to lead a “think tank” with the goal of improving American day care nationwide. This group of 80 top educators, psychologists and psychiatrists developed the policies and procedures for infant, preschool and afterschool day care which are still in use today.[1]

In 1969, Parker joined the faculty at The Graduate Center of City University of New York, where he continued his research on human motivation, particularly pertaining to child development and behavior.

Career (Corporate/ Education & Humanities)

Parker left the academic scene in 1970 to become Vice President of Research and Development for the Universal Education Corporation, a national children’s day care service. [2]

During this time Parker also served as a member on the original research teams for Sesame Street and Big Blue Marble.

In the mid-1970s, he founded and directed the Institute for the Development of Human Resources (IDHR), which collaborated with thirteen US state governments (including AL, CA, CT, FL, GA, MT and NY)  to deliver and implement improved day care services throughout their jurisdictions.[3] [4]The Institute subsequently expanded into Egypt, South Korea, Iran and Nigeria, offering services in health, education, welfare and manpower development.

In Nigeria, IDHR offered resources to assist the Universal Primary Education system and Nigerian job corps programs.  The most important services IDHR rendered to Nigeria was to work with the backing of Howard Hughes’ International Planning Associates (IPA) to design and build the new federal capital city, Abuja.  Parker headed IPA’s marketing team, aided by Abraham Krushkov, to win the competition to site locate and design the city.  IPA also won the contract over fourteen world-class competitors to oversee and manage the construction of the city with a budget valued today at over $24 billion.

Career (Corporate/ Fine Art)

After returning from Africa, Parker headed two public (Nasdaq) art companies—Circle Fine Art Corporation (1978-1980) and Fine Art Acquisitions/Dyansen Galleries (1980-1983).[5][6]

During his service as president of the Circle Fine Art Corporation (a public art company encompassing 25 galleries and American Atelier), Parker oversaw the publishing and distributing of the fine artworks of more than 100 artists.  Through his efforts, the then 13-year-old company doubled its sales and quadrupled its profits within 21 months.

As the founding partner and president of Fine Art Acquisitions/Dyansen (which was listed as one of the 50 fastest growing small public companies in America by Inc. Magazine), Parker published the Erte Sculpture Collection, establishing it as the major sculpture program in the world, based on sales.[7]  During this time he also established several successful Dyansen Galleries, as well as the R.K. Parker Gallery (SoHo).

Parker’s career in fine art continued through his establishment and heading of the company Parker & Parker Ltd., through which he retailed, published and distributed works of fine art from many international artists (1990-2000).  The sales from his art publishing programs have exceeded $700 million.[8]

Apart from art publishing, since 2000 Parker has served as an art advisor and international consultant in art collecting through his company Parker and Parker Art (PaPA).   His corporate office was originally located in Newport at the former Firestone mansion known as “The Orchard,” which he purchased in 1990.

He was also the owner of the Westhampton Gallery, Newport Art Gallery, Galerie Damien (Paris, France) and Galerie R.K.P. (New York), as well as a partner in Sculpture Group Limited; a publisher of artists Felix de Weldon, Frank Gallo, LeRoy Neiman and Frederick Hart; the chairman and founding partner of ConKer Fine Art; a publisher and distributor of Erte Objects d’ Art; and the president of International Art Publishers, through which he developed the Alexandra Nechita art program.

Present Life

Parker continues to edit and write publications, create artwork and manage his art consulting/publishing companies and Parker and Parker Art (PaPA) gallery. After 40 years of living in New York, he currently resides in Pennsylvania and Florida with his wife, artist Yvonne Parker.

Civic Involvement

Along with Gene Guerrero, Sue Thrasher and others, Parker founded the Southern Student Organizing Committee (SSOC) in the 1960s.[9]

In addition to participating in boycotts and “sit-ins” in Nashville, Parker also marched with Dr. King in Selma, Alabama in 1965.

In 1989, he established the Lou Ferguson Scholarship program, which provides assistance for disadvantaged minority students to help further their college education.
