He was a founding member of The Sixth Generation band between 1966 and 1968, then the band became inactive. After four decades, he and the other original members reformed the band in 2011. The band became inactive again in 2017, and Hamrick has been releasing songs independently since then. Personal lifeRon Hamrick was born in Niles, Michigan, where he grew up and started to learn to play the piano at the age of 5. He studied classical music until he was 14 years old. In February 1964, he watched The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show and turned his attention to pop-rock music, forming his first band shortly after that. During the forty-year break in his music career, he served in executive positions at information technology companies. Hamrick continued to write songs during that period, but none were published.[1] He has been married to Alida Hamrick since 1970.[2] Musical career1966–1970In 1966, inspired by The Beatles, Hamrick became a founding member of The Sixth Generation band as a vocalist and keyboardist. He was also one of the band's songwriters. In 1967, Hamrick co-wrote "This Is the Time", the band's debut single. The song gained popular attention in Michigan and nearby states and was regularly broadcast on radio stations throughout the area, including major stations in Chicago, Detroit, and Windsor. Hamrick continued touring with The Sixth Generation until 1968. Afterward, he did a short tour playing keyboards for the Eagles.[3] 2011–presentHamrick was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2011, along with the other members of The Sixth Generation.[4] The original members of The Sixth Generation reunited that same year and once again started touring, introducing a new song Hamrick had written called "That Was the Time".[5] Hamrick toured with the band in the US and UK over the next six years, penning twelve additional songs for the band during that timeframe. In 2013, The Sixth Generation performed at Cavern Club in Liverpool, England.[6] In 2015, Hamrick wrote "Livin' In A Small Town" for The Sixth Generation, which entered the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart on July 18 at number 3.[7] and reached number 2 on August 1,[8] one place after The Rolling Stones' 50-year anniversary re-release of "Satisfaction".[9] The song remained in the Top 10 on the chart for twelve weeks.[10] Hamrick wrote seven songs for The Sixth Generation's Feelin' Good album,[11] which made it to number 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart on March 26, 2016.[12] Toward the end of 2016, The Sixth Generation announced that it would only be doing two more performances in 2017, and that the band was then going to retire. At the same time, Hamrick announced he would continue writing and performing as a singer-songwriter, and he released a debut single in October 2016 called "I Saw the Sign", then an album called Musings in April 2017.[13] Hamrick started performing on his own in 2017. He did his last performance with The Sixth Generation in their home state of Michigan in August 2017.[3] As of October 2018, Hamrick has released an album with ten songs, a five-song EP, and eighteen singles as a singer-songwriter.
