Summary

The books traces the history rose of what it refers to as 'the world's favourite flower', referencing its historical symbolism in love and romance, and the way in which the flower is chosen to celebrate significant societal milestones,such as weddings, anniversaries, births and deaths. This book also charts the flower's botanical, religious, literary and artistic history throughout the centuries 'from battles to bouquets', using for historical examples, Cleopatra's rose-petal-filled bed to Nijinsky's Le Spectre de la rose; the highly prized attar of rose oil used by the ancient Persians; the use of the rose's scent in modern day perfumes; Shakespearean usage in the Wars of the Roses; and the significance of the rose in Queen Elizabeth I's embroidered dresses.
