Rosie Castro (born 1947) is an activist who works towards equal rights for minorities and women, especially those of Latino/a descent. She is a prominent leader and organizer of the La Raza Unida Party and Chicano Movement as well as the mother of US Rep. Joaquin Castro and former San Antonio mayor Julián Castro. Castro recently retired as the Dean of Student Success at Palo Alto College but is still an active member of the San Antonio community and political sphere.

Early Life and Education

Born an only child to single mother Victoria Castro, Castro is a Mexican-American who grew up in San Antonio following her immigration from Mexico at a young age.[1] Rosie was raised Catholic, attending primary and secondary school in San Antonio. From a young age, she was frustrated with the unequal treatment of women and the Latino population in everyday life, she even questioned school officials regarding the lack of diversity. She lived at home until the age of 23, and did not meet her father until the age of 34. [2]

In high school, Castro was the editor of her school paper and president of her high school class.[3] Outside of the classroom, she was a member of the Catholic Youth Association.[4] She received pushback from her Catholic school as she challenged the status quo by questioning segregation. Although a nun told her she was “not smart at all,” she was a hard worker and motivated, which led to her academic success.[5] Castro’s family informed her that she would not attend college for many reasons, including gender bias, money and ignorance of opportunity. However, Castro graduated as valedictorian of her class, which got her a full scholarship to Our Lady of the Lake College.[2]

Activism

While in college, Castro joined young democrats and volunteered for Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential campaign in 1964.[2] She also went to Austin to testify in favor of lowering the voting age to 18.[3] After college, Castro ran for city council at the young age of 23. She finished second out of four candidates. Although she did not win the election, that was only the beginning for her political success. The election sparked other Mexican- American women to advocate politically and run for office. [1] Soon after, she joined La Raza Unida Party which was formed as a result of racial tensions in Texas in the 1970s.[6] She believed in “[making] a difference by getting involved politically.” At the height of the La Raza Unida Party’s campaign, she registered voters, recommended candidates, served as campaign manager, and was appointed to La Raza’s Bexar County Chairwoman.[6] Although the party dissolved not long after it was formed, Castro continues to speak out against race and gender inequality.

Family

On September 16, 1974 Castro gave birth to two twin boys, Joaquin and Julian.[2] Castro was a single mother yet still managed to attend rallies and meetings when the boys were young. As her boys got older, she stepped back from her political career to put her sons through college.[7] School was always a priority for Castro, and she encouraged the importance of schooling throughout their lives. Both boys attended Stanford for their undergraduate degree and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School. She inspired her sons to enter into the political sphere, and Joaquin now serves as a US congressman representing the twentieth district of Texas and Julian is the mayor of San Antonio.[5]
