Ross Craig Allen (born 2 March 1987) is a Guernsey footballer who currently plays as a forward for Team Wellington in the ISPS Handa Premiership. Allen has spent the majority of his footballing career on the small island of Guernsey, bar small stints in the United States of America and New Zealand.

Allen is the record goalscorer for Guernsey FC, the island's representative team in the English football league system, with 226 league goals.[1][2]

Club career

Allen began his footballing career in the Priaulx League, playing for Guernsey Rangers. At the age of 16, Allen had a trial at Premier League club Newcastle United.[3]

College career

In 2006, following in the footsteps of his father Craig Allen, he continued his footballing career in the United States of America, gaining a footballing scholarship at the Florida Institute of Technology and playing for their representative football team Florida Tech Panthers in the Sunshine State Conference. On 31 August 2006, he scored a hat-trick to lead Tech to their first win of the season in a 12-0 win over Trinity Baptist College.[4] He finished his debut college season with 14 goals, and was named as the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year for his performances.[5] Following his year in the United States, Allen returned to Guernsey, continuing play for Guernsey Rangers, and being named Guernsey Football Association Player of the Year in 2009.[6][7][8]

Guernsey FC

In 2011, Guernsey FC was formed; the team was designed to compete in the English football league system as an amalgamation of the best players from Guernsey. Allen was signed by the club in their debut season, and spent seven seasons with the club, averaging more than a goal a game and attracting interest from professional clubs such as Swindon Town.[9] In November, Allen announced that he would be leaving Guernsey with the intent of living and working in New Zealand while also attempting to find a team to play for, citing his desire for "new adventures and experiences".[10][11][12][13]

Team Wellington

Allen began training with ISPS Handa Premiership club Team Wellington in December 2017, and the following month signed a contract until the end of the 2017-18 season.[14] He made his debut on 21 January 2018 against Hawke's Bay United, scoring just minutes after coming on in an eventual 2-1 win.[15] With Team Wellington, he lifted the 2018 OFC Champions League, scoring two goals in the final in a 10-3 aggregate win over Lautoka.[16][17] Allen finished the tournament with seven goals, tied for third top scorer, and later described winning the trophy as the highlight of his career.[18] The win qualified Team Wellington for their first ever FIFA Club World Cup.[19]

On 13 December 2018, Team Wellington faced Al-Ain in the playoff round of the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup. Allen was substituted on in the 119th minute, and following a 3-3 draw at the end of extra time, Allen scored in the penalty shootout as Team Wellington were knocked out.[20] Along with Gareth Bale, Allen was the only other Briton to appear at the Club World Cup that year.[21][22]

Personal life

Ross Allen is the son of fellow Guernsey national team footballer Craig Allen. His great-uncle William Allen and grandfather and Barry Hill also officially represented Guernsey.[23]
