Roy Poole was a stage actor, known for his portrayal of Rhode Island's Stephen Hopkins in the movie and Broadway production of "1776". He also appeared in other films, and on television. Mr. Poole was native of San Bernardino, California and he was a graduate of Stanford University. He served in the United States Army, Special Forces, during World War II. Mr. Poole died in Mount Kisco, New York, where he lived at the time of his death, at age 62. Mr. Poole was survived by his wife, the former Marie Cote. Mr. Poole portrayed featured roles on Broadway, in musicals and plays. In addition to the long-running musical, "1776", he also appeared in "St. Joan", and "I Knock at the Door". Off Broadway he won an Obie award in 1983 for ensemble playing, for his portrayal of the head of an English school in "Quartermaine's Terms". He was also featured in "Under Milk Wood", in "The Quare Fellow", and in "The Balcony", all long-running plays. He appeared in the film version of "1776" and in many other pictures, including "Up the Down Staircase", "Network", and "Mandingo". References |
