Based in New York City, Rube Goldberg, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization run by the Heirs of Rube Goldberg. Rube Goldberg, Inc. (a.k.a. RGI) has a primary goal of maintaining the legacy and archive of the late cartoonist and public figure, Rube Goldberg. RGI manages both the estate and also the official Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, which is a STEM/STEAM global science competition.

Official Rube Goldberg Machine Contest

Rube Goldberg, Inc. runs the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, which is a competition for elementary through high-school students.^[3] Each year the competition has a different task, which challenges students to build devices which complete a simple task in a minimum of twenty steps in the wacky style of American cartoonist Rube Goldberg. Local, 'live', contests are held throughout the United States, and regional winners are eligible to compete in the national contest.^[4]

In addition to the 'live' local contests run in the US, there is an online competition, which draws entries from around the globe.^[5]

The Rube Goldberg Machine Contest originated with college age students only at Purdue University in 1949^[6] and is now run by RGI and has been expanded to include elementary through high-school students.

Exhibitions

The estate is involved with two current exhibitions in the United States, which showcase the life and work of Rube Goldberg. "Rube Goldberg™: The World of Hilarious Invention!"^[7] is an experiential and educational children's exhibition which opened at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh on October 13th, 2018 and runs through May of 2019.

An all ages oriented retrospective is currently on view at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, PA, as part of the exhibition's tour throughout the United States. The exhibition, called, "The Art of Rube Goldberg"^[8], is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Rube Goldberg's work since the Smithsonian's 1970 celebration of the artist^[9]. It explores his varied career from his earliest published works and iconic Rube Goldberg machine invention drawings, to his Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoons, and more.
