Ruby McConnell is an American writer, geologist and activist. The author of A Woman’s Guide to the Wild[1], McConnell's writing has appeared widely in magazines and literary journals.

Personal Life

McConnell was born Siobhan Roberta McConnell in Portland, Oregon. She is a first generation American, the youngest daughter of Irish and Australian immigrants[2]. She began dancing at an early age and performed professionally for several years as an adult[3]. She credits her time dancing with providing her the focus, and discipline to pursue writing; McConnell attended summer camps and outdoor school as a child and young adult, experiences she says connected her to the environment[4]. She is married to Paul Hampshire.

Education and Work

Ruby attended Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon and worked with Greenpeace and other environmental groups for the next several years. She studied Geological Science and Environmental Studies at the University of Oregon. She received a Masters of Science degree with a focus on explosive volcanism, Mt. St. Helens in particular, from Northern Arizona University. After university she worked for several years as an environmental geologist specializing in identification and cleanup of toxic sites. She is a Registered Geologist with the State of Oregon. She is a vocal and life-long advocate for the environment and in 2017 was the organizer and emcee for the Eugene, Oregon, March for Science[5]. Her work focusing on the intersection of the human experience and the environment has been published in Grain Literary Journal[6], Oregon Humanities Magazine, Entropy[7], Mother Earth News[8], Oregon Quarterly[9], Fungi Magazine, and Bird Watchers Digest, among others. In 2016, she was the recipient of an Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship.
